Mets could get Manny in four-way blockbuster

Saturday, December 31st, 2005

The Daily News has reported, citing unnamed sources, that both the Red Sox and Orioles have resigned themselves to accommodating the trade requests of Ramirez and Tejada — both of whom want to be dealt away from their respective teams. Since the Orioles have signed Jeromy Burnitz to essentially complete their outfield, they simply don’t appear to have enough to accommodate the Red Sox in a straight-up (Tejada-for-Ramirez) deal.

That’s where the Devil Rays come in. They would send Joey Gathright to Boston to help fill the Red Sox’s center field hole. Obviously, Tejada would fill the void at shortstop.

Ramirez and Baez, on the other hand, would head for New York, giving the Mets one of the game’s best power hitters and set-up men.

As for the Orioles, they would satisfy their shortstop and pitching needs by acquiring Julio Lugo from Tampa Bay, and veteran right-hander Kris Benson from the Mets.

The Devil Rays are thought to be seeking young prospects — especially pitchers. And they could be satisfied on that front if they can acquire Red Sox third baseman Andy Marte, and pitchers Jae Seo and Aaron Heilman from the Mets.

In addition, The Daily News says that the Mets would send Kaz Matsui to the D-Rays to temporarily fill the void at shortstop until hot prospect B.J. Upton is ready for the big time.

Eric Byrnes signs with Diamondbacks

Saturday, December 31st, 2005

Outfielder Eric Byrnes has agreed to a one-year, $2.25 million contract with Arizona and promises to bring energy and enthusiasm to the Diamondbacks.

Byrnes, 29, slumped to a .226 batting average in a nomadic 2005 season that had him playing for Oakland, Colorado and Baltimore. In 2004, Byrnes hit .283 for Oakland with 20 home runs and 73 RBIs.

The Diamondbacks signed Byrnes to play center field, the position he loves most.

ChiSox Sign Garland – Contreras Wants BIG Money

Friday, December 30th, 2005

What is definitely shaping up to be a monster offseason for the Chicago White Sox, they went ahead and locked up SP Jon Garland to a 3 year $29 million dollar contract. To me, the money seems a little high for a guy that has really only had 1 1/2 good seasons, but worse case scenario, they overpaid for a consistent middle to bottom of the rotation starter.

On the other hand, Jose Contreras, who just got his act together this season after a miserable three years in the Bronx, wants Ace money, asking for a three year contract extension worth $11-$12 million per year. Yes, Contreras was great for them last year, but he does have a long history of sub-par performances and even though his bio says that he’s only 34, I think we all know he is probably somewhere around 38. With the intelligent moves that the White Sox front office has been making this offseason, my feeling is that they will either try to move him this year, or hold on to him through the season and let him be on his merry way.

Joe Randa returns to Pirates

Thursday, December 29th, 2005

Joe Randa, the third baseman on the only Pirates team in 13 years to contend for a division title, is returning to Pittsburgh.

The 36-year-old Randa hit a career-high 17 homers while splitting last season between the Reds and Padres, making $2.15 million. He has hit .300 or better four times, including a .302 season with Pittsburgh in 1997, and has driven in 80 runs or more four times.

I think Randa is one of the most underrated players in baseball along with his new Pirate teammate Sean Casey.

Yankees sign Octavio Dotel

Thursday, December 29th, 2005

Octavio Dotel agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract with the New York Yankees after beginning last season with Oakland but not pitching past May because of major elbow surgery.

The right-hander was 1-2 with a 3.52 earned run average in 15 games for Oakland in 2005 before being placed on the disabled list May 19 and undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

In his 15 appearances, he limited opposing batters to a .185 average and held right-handed hitters to just three hits in 28 at-bats (.107). He has 481 strikeouts in 389 2-3 innings as reliever since the 2001 season, the most in the majors.

Manny and Matt Clement for Tejada

Thursday, December 29th, 2005

This is the newest speculation.  The Red Sox are trying to trade Manny and throw in Clement for Tejada.  In my opinion would be a terrible move, unless tejada can cover Left and center field.

Jeremy Burnitz to Orioles

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

The O’s are looking to add the strike out king of the world, Jeremy Burnitz.  3 Years for 12 million.

Personally the O’s need to work on that pitching staff and not their offense.

Kevin Millwood Signs with Rangers

Monday, December 26th, 2005

Free agent pitcher Kevin Millwood reached a preliminary agreement on a $60 million, five-year contract with Texas, giving the Rangers the legitimate No. 1 starter they have been seeking.

Millwood had a 2.86 ERA to lead the American League last season, his only season for Cleveland. The right-hander, who turned 31 Saturday, rejected a salary arbitration offer from the Indians.

In nine major league seasons, Millwood is 107-75 with a 3.76 ERA. He won at least 17 games in three of his six seasons with Atlanta (1997-2002) and was an All-Star in 1999. He pitched two seasons for Philadelphia before going to Cleveland last year.

Red Sox trying to sign Millwood

Saturday, December 24th, 2005

Days after losing Johnny Damon to the New York Yankees, the Red Sox were meeting with his agent, Scott Boras, about bringing pitcher Kevin Millwood to Boston.

Millwood went 9-11 with a 2.86 ERA in 30 starts for the Indians last season and made $7 million. He was limited to 25 starts with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2004, when he was bothered by elbow swelling. While he was 9-6 with a 4.85 ERA for the Phillies that season, he won only two games after hurting his right elbow.

Although the Red Sox need a shortstop, a first baseman and a center fielder, they would appear to have plenty of starting pitchers. But lefty David Wells has asked for a trade closer to his West Coast home, and the team has said it would try to accommodate him.

Blue Jays, D-Backs reach tentative deal on Glaus

Friday, December 23rd, 2005

The Blue Jays have reached a tentative agreement to obtain third baseman Troy Glaus from the Diamondbacks.

In return for Glaus, the Diamondbacks are expected to acquire second baseman Orlando Hudson and right-hander Miguel Batista. The Jays also might receive a prospect in the deal.

Glaus, 29, had the power to invoke the limited no-trade protection in his contract to block a trade to Toronto, but he apparently has agreed to waive that right and approve the deal.
