Clemens Returns to Houston

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Clemens agreed to a $22 million contract Wednesday to pitch for Houston for the rest of 2006, ending months of speculation around baseball and in his own mind whether he could – or even wanted to – play a 23rd season.

The 43-year-old Clemens is agreeing first to a minor league deal that pays $322,000 over the five-month minor league season. He is due to make his first start next Tuesday at Lexington, Ky., the Class A affiliate where oldest son Koby plays.

When he is added to the major league roster, he gets a one-year contract worth $22,000,022 – his uniform number is 22. Because he won’t be playing the full season, he gets only a prorated percentage of that, which would come to about $12.25 million if he rejoins Houston in late June.

Clemens has a career record of 341-172 with a 3.12 ERA and 4,502 strikeouts, pitching for Boston, Toronto, the Yankees and Astros. An 11-time All-Star and winner of the 1986 AL MVP Award, he is tied for eighth on the career wins list and is second in strikeouts behind Nolan Ryan (5,714).

Rangers trade Nevin to Cubs for Hairston

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Struggling designated hitter Phil Nevin was traded Wednesday by the Texas Rangers to the Chicago Cubs, desperately seeking a bopper to help replace injured slugger Derrek Lee.
The Rangers, who will pay a portion of Nevin’s $10 million salary, got utility player Jerry Hairston Jr. from the Cubs.

Nevin was hitting .216 with nine homers and 31 RBIs in 46 games for Texas. Nevin had only two hits in his last 32 at-bats, both home runs.

Hairston, who went to Chicago from Baltimore in the Sammy Sosa trade before the 2005 season, was hitting .207 with no homers and four RBIs in 38 games for the Cubs. The 30-year-old Hairston started 21 games this season, 18 at second base, two in right field and one in left.

Mets acquire El Duque from Arizona

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

The pitching-thin New York Mets acquired Orlando Hernandez from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday. The Mets traded reliever Jorge Julio to get Hernandez.

Listed at 36 years old, Hernandez was struggling in his first season in the National League. He was just 2-4 with a 6.11 ERA in nine starts for the West-leading Diamondbacks.

Julio was 1-2 with a 5.06 ERA in his first season with the Mets. He struck out 33 in 21 1-3 innings, and had pitched better of late after a rough beginning.

Edgardo Alfonzo Close to Joining Blue Jays

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

Infielder Edgardo Alfonzo, released last weekend by the Angels, is on the verge of signing a minor-league contract with the Blue Jays.

Alfonzo, 32, is expected to join the Jays’ Class AAA affiliate and play second base. If he performs well, he eventually could take over at second for the Jays. Aaron Hill, the team’s current second baseman, then would move to shortstop.

The Blue Jays demoted shortstop Russ Adams along with right-hander Josh Towers to Class AAA Wednesday night after a 10-8 loss to the Devil Rays. The team has been pursuing a trade for Angels second baseman Adam Kennedy, but the talks have not progressed.

Alfonzo was 5-for-50 (.100) with the Angels and struggled to adjust to a part-time role.
