Mariners Acquire Perez from Indians

Friday, June 30th, 2006

The Mariners have acquired first baseman/designated hitter Eduardo Perez from the Indians.

Perez, 36, was batting .303 for the Indians with eight homers and 22 RBIs in 99 at-bats.
In exchange, the Indians received Triple-A infielder Asdrubal Cabrera.

The Mariners rank next-to-last in on-base/slugging percentage from the DH spot. Perez figures to platoon with Carl Everett, a switch-hitter who has performed better from the left side.

Cabrera, 20, was assigned to Triple-A Buffalo; the Indians view him as a legitimate prospect at second base or shortstop.

The Indians promoted Triple-A first baseman Ryan Garko to replace Perez on their major-league roster.

The Dodgers have acquired left-hander Mark Hendrickson and catcher Toby Hall from the Devil Rays for right-hander Jae Seo, catcher Dioner Navarro and a player to be named.

Hendrickson, 4-8 with a 3.81 ERA, joins a rotation that has featured only two consistent starters, right-handers Derek Lowe and Brad Penny.

Seo, 2-4 with a 5.78 ERA, was dropped from the Dodgers’ rotation in May and has been pitching out of the bullpen. The Devil Rays could keep Seo — he is not be eligible for arbitration until after this season — or spin him to another club. The Mets have shown interest in re-acquiring Seo, 29, whom they traded to the Dodgers along with reliever Tim Hamulack last January for relievers Duaner Sanchez and Steve Schmoll.

The Red Sox have acquired right-hander Jason Johnson from the Indians for cash considerations.

Johnson, 32, was designated for assignment by the Indians on Tuesday as part of a team-wide shakeup. The Indians had 10 days to trade Johnson, release him or put him on waivers.

The Red Sox are expected to pick up the majority of the reported $2.2 million remaining on Johnson’s contract. The Indians will not receive a player in return.

Johnson, signed by the Indians last winter as a free agent, was 2-1 with a 3.41 ERA in April, but since then is 1-7 with a 7.74 ERA.

The Red Sox have been aggressively pursuing a starter since right-hander Matt Clement joined left-handers David Wells and Lenny DiNardo on the disabled list.
