Rangers get Kip Wells from Pirates

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Wells has appeared in just seven games this season after undergoing surgery in March to repair a blocked artery in his pitching arm.

He picked up his first win in almost 10 months Friday, throwing seven innings of shutout baseball against the Giants, allowing just five hits and three walks.

Despite the surgery — and his 1-5 record with a 6.69 ERA — Wells had been targeted by several teams as the deadline approached. Both the Red Sox and the Mets had reportedly expressed an interest.

The Dodgers also acquired shortstop Julio Lugo from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in exchange for highly-touted minor league prospect Joel Guzman and fellow minor-leaguer Sergio Pedroza, Stark reported. Lugo will play second base for a while Jeff Kent is sidelined by an oblique injury and will reassess his position when Kent returns.

The Texas Rangers, looking for a left-handed bat off the bench, acquired Matt Stairs from the Kansas City Royals for minor-league pitcher Joselo Diaz.

Stairs, 38, was hitting .261 with eight homers and 32 RBI for the Royals this season. He’s a career .266 hitter with 215 homers for Montreal, Boston, the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh, Oakland, Milwaukee and Kansas City.

Diaz, a right-hander, is 2-0 with four saves this season while pitching primarily in relief for Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma.

Mets add Perez & Hernandez from Pirates

Monday, July 31st, 2006

The Mets acquired left-hander Oliver Perez and reliever Roberto Hernandez from the Pirates in exchange for outfielder Xavier Nady.

The need to bolster the staff intensified when the Mets lost right-handed setup man Duaner Sanchez for the season to a separated pitching shoulder.

Perez was 2-10 with a 6.63 ERA in 15 starts before being sent down to Triple-A in June. In 2004, he was 12-10 with a 2.99 ERA but hasn’t been the same since.

Nady has a career-high 14 home runs this season since coming over to the Mets from the Padres in an offseason trade.

Latest Deadline Rumors

Monday, July 31st, 2006

The Red Sox are attempting to strike a three-way deal with the Rockies and Padres, with third baseman Mike Lowell shipped out of town and first baseman Ryan Shealy arriving here from Colorado. The Sox also would presumably obtain a more-than-reputable starter.

Also figuring prominently in the rumor mill was Tampa Bay shortstop Julio Lugo.

The Angels have also had trade talks involving third basemen Aramis Ramirez of the Chicago Cubs and Chad Tracy of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Astros still want to acquire Miguel Tejada, but they’re not going to give up ace righthander Roy Oswalt to get the All-Star shortstop in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles.

Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty confirmed having recent conversations with the Florida Marlins about ace Dontrelle Willis but was reminded that the club has no interest in dealing him.

According to two National League sources, the Marlins have contacted the Nationals about acquiring the ballyhooed outfielder. It is believed the Marlins are willing to part with some upper level pitching prospects such as Yusmeiro Petit, Renyel Pinto and Jason Vargas to land the five-time All-Star and make a run at the wild card.

Reds get Kyle Lohse from Minnesota

Monday, July 31st, 2006

In exchange for Lohse, the Reds sent 22-year-old right-hander Zach Ward to the Twins.

The 27-year-old Lohse is 2-5 with a 7.07 ERA in eight starts and 14 relief appearances. In his six-year major league career, all with the Twins, Lohse is 51-57 with a 4.88 ERA, and has made five postseason appearances.

Ward was the Reds’ third-round pick in 2005, and was 7-0 with a 2.29 ERA in 18 starts and two relief appearances for Class A Dayton.

The Reds have done a great job improving their bullpen.

Tigers Acquire Sean Casey

Monday, July 31st, 2006

The Tigers, completing their quest to add a left-handed hitter, acquired first baseman Sean Casey from the Pirates on Monday for Class AA right-hander Brian Rogers.

Casey, 32, was batting .296 with a .377 on-base percentage, three homers and 29 RBIs in 213 at-bats with the Pirates. He missed approximately six weeks earlier this season with a back injury. Their preference, however, was for a left-handed bat. Casey isn’t much of a power threat, but his high OBP makes him an effective offensive player. Casey, who also has played for Cincinnati and Cleveland, is also considered an above-average fielder. He has not committed an error in 491 total chances at first base this season and has posted a .995 fielding percentage at first base during his career.

Rogers was 3-2 with a 2.39 ERA in 37 appearances at Double-A Erie this season.
