Red Sox, Rockies discussing Helton trade

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

The Red Sox are in serious discussions with the Rockies about acquiring first baseman Todd Helton, but a trade hinges on how much of Helton’s contract the Rockies would be willing to assume. The talks began when the Red Sox inquired about Helton at the general managers’ meetings in November and have continued periodically since then, another source said. The discussions also are being reported by the Denver Post.

The Rockies would receive right-hander Craig Hansen along with two other prospects, according to a major-league source. Class AA center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, the Sox’s top position prospect, almost certainly is one of the Rockies’ targets, but it is likely that a variety of major-and minor-league names are being exchanged.

Helton, 33, possesses a complete no-trade clause and is guaranteed $90.1 million over the next six seasons. He has said he would consider Boston, according to the Post, but his remaining salary is a major obstacle to any deal.

If the Sox acquired Helton, they possibly could move Youkilis to third and trade Mike Lowell, who is entering the last year of his contract. The addition of Helton would not address the team’s need for a closer; sending Lowell to a team such as the Padres could bring relief help.

Mariners leading contender to land Jeff Weaver

Friday, January 26th, 2007

In a blow to the World Series champion Cardinals, the Mariners are close to signing free-agent right-hander Jeff Weaver to a one-year contract. Weaver, 30, is declining to pursue a two-year deal because of his desire to re-enter the free-agent market after next season, according to a source close to the negotiations. Weaver would be the third starter acquired by the Mariners this off-season, joining right-hander Miguel Batista, who signed a three-year, $25 million free-agent contract, and left-hander Horacio Ramirez, who arrived in a trade from the Braves.

The Cardinals, operating under the premise that they are out of the running for Weaver, will not attempt to acquire another starting pitcher, a major-league source said.

Erstad signs with White Sox

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

Free-agent outfielder Darin Erstad officially became a candidate for the White Sox’s center-field job Wednesday, signing a one-year, $1 million contract with a club option for 2008. The value of the option is $3.5 million, but could escalate to a maximum of $6 million if Erstad makes 600 plate appearances next season. It would increase by another $250,000 if Erstad is named Comeback Player of the Year. Erstad, 32, will earn a $750,000 salary in ’07 and receive a $250,000 buyout if the Sox do not exercise his option. The value of his buyout also can increased base on his number of plate appearances, to a maximum of $1.25 million.

Erstad, a left-handed hitter, could figure in a center-field platoon with Brian Anderson, or win the job outright. He also could serve as a backup to Paul Konerko at first base.

Cubs, Cliff Floyd reach agreement

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Free agent outfielder and first baseman Cliff Floyd agreed Wednesday to a one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs after spending four seasons with the New York Mets. The deal includes a mutual option for 2008.

The 34-year-old Floyd had surgery on his left foot in October, after hitting .244 with 11 homers and 44 RBIs. The Mets replaced him in left field with Moises Alou, a free agent who agreed to a contract in October.

Red Sox reach terms with Donnelly

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

The Boston Red Sox avoided arbitration with right-hander Brendan Donnelly on Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $1.4 million contract. The deal also calls for bonuses of $25,000 each if he finishes 25 games and 30 games.

Donnelly was 6-0 with a 3.94 ERA in 62 games last season, going 5-0 with a 3.52 ERA in 29 games after the All-Star break and holding opponents scoreless in 19 of his last 21 appearances. His best year was 2003, when he allowed only two earned runs in his first 50 innings and was the winning pitcher in the AL’s 7-6 victory over the NL in the All-Star game. He finished the season with a 1.58 ERA and a career-high three saves.

Alfonseca agrees to 1-year deal with Phillies

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Right-hander Antonio Alfonseca agreed to a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. Alfonseca agreed to the major league minimum of $380,000, and if he appears on the regular-season roster, his base salary will be increased to $700,000.

Once a dominant closer with Florida, Alfonseca has struggled with injuries in recent seasons.

In 10 seasons in the majors, Alfonseca is 30-35 with 121 saves and a 3.99 ERA in 531 games with four teams, including two stints with Florida.

Athletics trade Saarloos to Cincinnati

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

The Cincinnati Reds acquired the right-hander Tuesday in a trade that sent minor league reliever David Shafer to the Oakland Athletics. Each team will get a player to be named as well. The 27-year-old Saarloos went 7-7 with two saves and a 4.75 ERA last season for the AL West champions. After being Oakland’s No. 5 starter in 2005, he made 16 starts and 19 relief appearances last year, and figured he was headed for the bullpen again this season.

The Reds are trying to fill out their rotation and bolster a bullpen that was one of their biggest problems last season. Saarloos could fit in either spot.

The Reds also agreed to a minor league contract with infielder Mark Bellhorn and invited him to spring training.

Erstad could still return to Angels

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Free agent Darin Erstad still could return to the Angels as a backup first baseman and outfielder, but the Marlins and White Sox are offering him greater playing time, according to his agent, Greg Genske.

The Cubs, who remain interested in Erstad, are on the verge of signing outfielder Cliff Floyd and probably can’t fit another free agent into their budget even if they trade right fielder Jacque Jones, major-league sources said.

The Marlins, who have failed in their attempts to land a young center fielder this off-season, want Erstad to be their regular in center. The White Sox could use Erstad, a left-handed hitter, in a center-field platoon with Brian Anderson and also as a backup to Paul Konerko at first base. Erstad turned down a one-year offer from the A’s.

Felipe Lopez avoids arbitration

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Felipe Lopez and the Washington Nationals avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $3.9 million, one-year deal Monday. Lopez and the club met right in the middle: He had asked for $4.1 million when he filed for arbitration, while the Nationals submitted a $3.7 million offer. Lopez made $2.7 million last year.

Lopez’s best season came with the Reds in 2005, when he was an All-Star and hit .291 with 23 homers and 85 RBIs.

Wells agrees to rejoin hometown team

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

David Wells is all but penciled in as the No. 5 starter for his hometown San Diego Padres. The Padres and Wells’ agent reached preliminary agreement Friday on a one-year, $3 million contract plus incentives that will give the 43-year-old left-hander the chance to earn a maximum of $7 million if he makes 27 starts. Padres general manager Kevin Towers said the two sides need to finalize some contract language and Wells must pass a physical. He expects the deal to be finalized by Monday or Tuesday.

Wells will anchor a rotation that includes Jake Peavy, Chris Young, Clay Hensley and Greg Maddux, a four-time Cy Young Award winner.

Besides his $3 million in base pay, Wells can earn $1 million in active roster bonuses, meaning he must avoid time on the disabled list, and another $3 million based on making starts 11 through 27.
