Phils continue to upgrade pitching

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

The Phillies, one day after acquiring right-hander Kyle Lohse to upgrade their rotation, made a move to supplement their bullpen Tuesday, obtaining Class AAA right-hander Julio Mateo from the Mariners. Mateo, who turns 30 on Thursday, figures to replace righty Ryan Madson, who suffered a strained right shoulder Sunday. The Phillies’ bullpen recently was bolstered by the returns of right-handers Tom Gordon and Brett Myers from injuries.

In return, the Phillies sent infielder Jesus Merchan from Double-A Reading to Seattle.

Mateo, who turns 30 on Thursday, is 18-12 with two saves and a 3.68 ERA in 219 games over six seasons in Seattle. He had an 0.79 ERA in 24 games at Triple-A Tacoma, allowing just three earned runs in 34 1/3 innings. Opponents batted just .200 against him.

Giants deal Morris, big contract to Pirates

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired pitcher Matt Morris from San Francisco on Tuesday, an uncommon deal for a high-priced player by an out-of-contention team at the trading deadline.
Pittsburgh sent rookie outfielder Rajai Davis and a player to be named to the Giants, who began shedding salary as they look to rebuild one of the majors’ oldest teams.

The right-handed Morris, who will be 33 on Aug. 9, was a 22-game winner for St. Louis in 2002 who is 7-7 with a 4.35 ERA this season. He was rocked for 13 hits and six earned runs in seven innings in his last start, an 8-5 loss to Florida on Sunday. He is 0-4 in his last eight starts since June 11.

Morris is 118-84 with a 3.83 ERA in a career that began in 1997 with St. Louis. He also won 17 games in 2002 and 15 games in 2004. He joined the Giants after signing a $27 million, three-year deal in December 2005.

The 26-year-old Davis, a 38th-round draft pick in 2001, is hitting .271 with no homers and two RBIs in 24 games. He was a spare outfielder with Pittsburgh who didn’t figure to play much in the future.

Padres get Ensberg, Mackowiak, Ledezma

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

The Padres, continuing to solidify their roster in anticipation of a playoff push, have acquired White Sox outfielder Rob Mackowiak, Astros third baseman Morgan Ensberg and reliever Wilfredo Ledezma from Atlanta. Earlier this week, the Padres added outfielder Scott Hairston from the Diamondbacks and released infielder Russell Branyan. They also signed infielder Shea Hillenbrand to a minor-league contract.

The Astros sent Ensberg and cash considerations to the Padres for a player to be named or cash. The White Sox traded Mackowiak to San Diego for pitcher Jon Link. The Braves traded Ledezma and minor league pitcher Will Startup for reliever Royce Ring.

The 31-year-old Ensberg was hitting .232 with eight homers and 31 RBIs in 85 games. Houston is responsible for the remainder of Ensberg’s $4.35 million salary this season. Ensberg hit a career-low .235 with 58 RBIs last year. In 2005, he batted .283 with 36 home runs and 101 RBIs. His 105 career home runs rank second all-time among Astros third basemen.

Link was 2-1 with 13 saves and a 3.07 ERA in 41 relief appearances for Class A Lake Elsinore. The 23-year-old righty is in his third minor league season.

Ledezma started the season with Detroit, then was traded to Atlanta. He was ineffective with the Braves and recently designated for assignment. Ring, who split this year in the majors and minors, was assigned by the Braves to Triple-A Richmond.

Ring was 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in 15 games for San Diego and 4-0 with a 1.99 ERA for Triple-A Portland this year. The Braves assigned the lefty to Triple-A Richmond.

Cards get Pineiro, cash for minor leaguer

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

A big weekend put the St. Louis Cardinals close enough to contending status to at least take a stab at improving the roster at the trade deadline. The pitching-starved defending World Series champions on Tuesday acquired right-hander Joel Pineiro, optioned to the minors last week by the Boston Red Sox, and cash for a minor league player to be named.

Pineiro, 28, was a 16-game winner in 2003 and won 14 games in 2002. He was used exclusively in relief this year by the Red Sox.

Pineiro has a career record of 59-56 with a 4.50 ERA in 26 games, including 148 starts. He was 14-7 in 2002 and 16-11 in 2003.

Yanks deal Proctor for Betemit

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

The New York Yankees traded workhorse reliever Scott Proctor to the Los Angeles Dodgers for infielder Wilson Betemit on Tuesday in a deal that could add some punch to their limited bench. Betemit hit .231 with 10 homers and 26 RBIs with Los Angeles.

The 25-year-old switch-hitter also can play shortstop and second base, and the Yankees said they may take a look at him at first as well.

Red Sox acquire Gagne

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

The Red Sox scored one of the biggest coups at the non-waiver trade deadline Tuesday, acquiring right-hander Eric Gagne from the Rangers.

Gagne, 31, waived his no-trade clause to Boston in exchange for financial considerations. The Red Sox also assured Gagne that he will close games on nights that Jonathan Papelbon is unavailable.

In return for Gagne, the Rangers received left-hander Kason Gabbard, Class AAA center fielder David Murphy and Class A outfielder Engel Beltre, sources say. Beltre is just 17 years old.

Red Sox on verge of getting Gagne

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Gagne must waive his no-trade clause to Boston for the deal to be completed. It is possible the Red Sox will allow him to share the closer’s role with Jonathan Papelbon.

The Rangers would receive left-hander Kason Gabbard and an additional player or players in the deal, sources say.

Before reaching agreement with the Red Sox, the Rangers had discussed trading Gagne to the Mets, Yankees and Brewers. He could have been sent to each of those teams without his permission.

Mets fill need for a second baseman

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

The NL East-leading New York Mets neatly filled a big hole at second base, acquiring three-time All-Star Luis Castillo from the Minnesota Twins for a pair of prospects Monday.

Castillo, who is making $5.75 million this season, can become a free agent after the World Series. He has only nine stolen bases in 13 attempts and just 29 walks in 349 at-bats with 11 doubles, three triples and 18 RBIs, but he has been one of only a handful of consistent hitters for the Twins this year.

Minnesota gets catcher Drew Butera, who will report to Double-A New Britain, and outfielder Dustin Martin, who will go to Class-A Fort Myers.

Braves take lead in bidding for Dotel

Monday, July 30th, 2007

The Braves could be on the verge of not only acquiring the best hitter on the trade market, but one of the best relievers as well. In addition to reaching a preliminary agreement for Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira, the Braves are close to a deal for Royals closer Octavio Dotel, according to major-league sources.

In exchange for Dotel, the Royals would receive right-hander Kyle Davies, according to the Kansas City Star. Davies, 23, is 0-1 with a 4.50 in two starts for Class AAA Richmond after going 4-8 with a 5.76 ERA in 17 starts with the Braves.

The Dotel trade is contingent on the Braves finalizing their deal for Teixeira and left-handed reliever Ron Mahay, according to an industry source.

The Braves, Indians and Dodgers are the three finalists for Dotel, sources say.

Braves set to acquire Teixeira from Rangers

Monday, July 30th, 2007

The Braves are on the verge of acquiring Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira. The deal is done, pending a review of the medical records of the players involved, according to major-league sources.
The Braves will receive Teixeira and left-handed reliever Ron Mahay.

The Rangers will receive catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Class A shortstop Elvis Andrus and two additional prospects. One of the prospects is believed to be Class AA left-hander Matt Harrison.

Teixeira, who does not become a free agent until after next season, also would give the Braves lineup protection against the likely departure of center fielder Andruw Jones as a free agent this off-season.

The Angels also made a strong bid for Teixeira, offering first baseman Casey Kotchman and left-hander Joe Saunders. They were willing to include a third player, but not at the level the Rangers were seeking, sources said.
