Baez, Orioles agree on $19M deal

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Free-agent reliever Danys Baez and the Baltimore Orioles reached a preliminary agreement on a $19 million, three-year contract Sunday night, a move that further solidifies a bullpen that finished with the second-worst ERA in the major leagues last season.

Baez went 5-6 with nine saves and a 4.53 ERA for the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers this year. The right-hander made the All-Star team in 2005 for Tampa Bay, going 5-4 with 41 saves and a 2.86 ERA.

Baltimore last week signed Jamie Walker, a left-handed reliever. The Orioles entered the offseason intent upon overhauling an erratic bullpen that was 19-25 with a 5.25 ERA and 35 saves in 56 opportunities.

Baez also was pursued by the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox and Indians, Genske said. The pitcher made $4 million in 2006.

Orioles agree with ex-Tigers lefty reliever Walker

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Left-hander Jamie Walker and the Baltimore Orioles reached a preliminary agreement on a $12 million, three-year contract. Walker will get $3 million next year and $4.5 million in each of the following two seasons. The deal is subject to a physical, scheduled for Friday.

The 35-year-old reliever was 0-1 with a 2.81 ERA this year for the AL champion Detroit Tigers. He has a 15-16 career record with five saves and a 3.95 ERA. He spent his first two major league seasons with Kansas City and the last six with the Tigers.

Yankees deal Wright to Orioles

Sunday, November 12th, 2006

The New York Yankees wanted to save $3 million, and for that price the Baltimore Orioles thought Jaret Wright was a bargain. Wright was traded to the Orioles on Sunday for right-handed reliever Chris Britton. As part of the deal, the Yankees will pay $4 million of Wright’s $7 million salary next year.

After agreeing to a $21 million, three-year contract, Wright had a pair of disappointing seasons with the Yankees. He injured a shoulder early in the 2005 season and was 5-5 with a 6.08 ERA in 13 starts, then went 11-7 with a 4.49 ERA this year, not pitching more than 6 1-3 innings in any of his 27 starts.

Britton, who turns 24 on Dec. 16, was taken by Baltimore on the eighth round of the 2001 amateur draft. He made his major league debut last season, going 0-2 with one save and a 3.35 ERA in 52 relief appearances with the Orioles while holding batters to a .228 average. He also was 1-0 with a 2.81 ERA and two saves in 13 games for Bowie of the Double-A Eastern League.

Phillies get Conine from Orioles

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

Jeff Conine was traded to Philadelphia from the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, a deal that provides the Phillies with a solid right-handed bat and veteran leadership in their drive to earn a wild-card berth.

The Orioles sent Conine and cash to Philadelphia for a player to be named. The deal was completed during the seventh inning of Baltimore’s 5-4 win over Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Conine is hitting .265 with nine homers and 49 RBIs. He’s played left field this season and spent some time at first base.

Red Sox get Javy Lopez from Orioles

Friday, August 4th, 2006

The Orioles send catcher Javy Lopez to the Red Sox for a player to be named later as well as cash considerations.

The Orioles, who will get a mid-level prospect in return, are expected to include a little over $1 million to Boston to help offset Lopez’s remaining salary. The 35-year-old, who cleared waivers Thursday, still has $2.75 million remaining on the three-year, $22.5 million contract he signed with Baltimore before the ’04 season.

After losing his starting catching job when the Orioles signed Ramon Hernandez before the season, Lopez has campaigned for a trade and the organization tried to grant him his wish, but found little interest. When Monday’s trade deadline passed with him still on the Orioles, Lopez told reporters that he wanted to be released.

Boston is in need of a catcher because Jason Varitek is expected to be out for about a month after knee surgery Thursday.

Mets Trade right-hander Kris Benson to the Orioles for reliever Jorge Julio and right-hander John Maine

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

The trade with the Orioles will give right-hander Aaron Heilman a chance to become the Mets’ No. 5 starter.

Benson will join a rotation that includes left-hander Erik Bedard, and right-handers Daniel Cabrera and Rodrigo Lopez.

Benson finished the 2005 season with a 10-8 record, with a 4.13 earned run average and 95 strikeouts over 174.1 innings pitched. Julio appeared in 67 games for the Orioles in 2005, recording 58 strikeouts over 71.2 innings with a 5.90 earned run average.

Kevin Millar leaves Boston for Baltimore

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

First baseman Kevin Millar agreed to a $2.1 million, one-year contract Thursday with the Baltimore Orioles.

The 34-year-old Millar, who can make an additional $2.6 million in performance bonuses, hit .276 with 25 home runs and 96 RBIs with Boston in 2003, then batted .297 with 18 homers and 74 RBIs for the World Series champions in 2004.

His production dropped last year, when he hit .272 with nine homers and 50 RBIs. But he remained a leader in the Boston clubhouse.

Millar is a career .289 batter over 932 games and exactly 3,000 at-bats. He has 111 homers and 471 RBIs.

Manny and Matt Clement for Tejada

Thursday, December 29th, 2005

This is the newest speculation.  The Red Sox are trying to trade Manny and throw in Clement for Tejada.  In my opinion would be a terrible move, unless tejada can cover Left and center field.

Jeremy Burnitz to Orioles

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

The O’s are looking to add the strike out king of the world, Jeremy Burnitz.  3 Years for 12 million.

Personally the O’s need to work on that pitching staff and not their offense.

Rumor: Cubs will send Prior to Orioles for Tejada

Thursday, December 22nd, 2005

The Cubs, aggressively pursuing a blockbuster trade for Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada, are willing to part with a top starting pitcher, most likely right-hander Mark Prior, sources tell FOXsports.com.

The Cubs and Orioles also have engaged in three-way discussions with the Red Sox in which Tejada would go to the Cubs and Ramirez to the Orioles, according to another source. The package the Sox would receive is unclear, but conceivably could include Prior, shortstop Ronny Cedeno and center fielder Corey Patterson.
