McCarthy goes from White Sox to Rangers

Saturday, December 23rd, 2006

Texas acquired right-hander Brandon McCarthy from the Chicago White Sox in a five-player deal Saturday in which the Rangers gave up their 2003 first-round pick. John Danks, the ninth overall pick three years ago, and fellow right-handers Nick Masset and Jacob Rasner were sent to Chicago for McCarthy and outfielder David Paisano.

The 23-year-old McCarthy already has 65 major league appearances (12 starts), and is 7-9 with a 4.39 ERA. He has 117 career strikeouts while walking only 50 batters in 151 2-3 innings. McCarthy worked primarily out of the bullpen for the first time last season, and was 10th in the AL with 75 1-3 innings worked in relief. The Rangers plan to use him as a starter.

Danks split last season between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma, where he combined to go 9-9 with a 4.24 ERA in 27 games (26 starts). He has a career minor league record of 21-30 with a 4.20 ERA in 92 games (82 starts).

Masset made his major league debut last year with Texas, with no record and a 4.15 ERA in eight relief appearances. Rasner spent the entire 2006 season at Class-A Clinton, going 6-16 with a 5.41 ERA in 27 starts.

The 18-year-old Paisano appeared in 52 games for the White Sox Venezuelan Summer League team in 2006 and batted .338 with no home runs and 17 RBI.

White Sox trade Gload to Royals

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

First baseman-outfielder Ross Gload was traded by the Chicago White Sox on Saturday to the Kansas City Royals for reliever Andrew Sisco, a 6-foot-10 left-hander coming off a difficult season. Sisco has a 3-8 record and 4.85 ERA in 132 games the last two seasons with Kansas City. He was 1-3 with a 7.10 ERA in 65 games last year, slipping from his first season when he went 2-5 with a 3.11 ERA.

The White Sox plan to talk with Sisco to decide if he wants to remain in the bullpen – where he might help immediately – or try to be a starter, which could mean he’d go to Triple-A.

Gload batted .327 with three home runs and 18 RBI in 77 games with the White Sox in 2006. Gload, a left-handed batter, hit .308 with 10 homers and 67 RBIs over three seasons as a backup for the White Sox. He’s also been with the Chicago Cubs and Colorado.

White Sox could trade Garland to Astros

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

White Sox arediscussing sending right-hander Jon Garland to the Astros for center fielder Willy Taveras and right-handed pitching prospects Taylor Buchholz and Jason Hirsh.

The trade, if completed, likely would signal the end of the Astros’ quest to re-sign free-agent left-hander Andy Pettitte.

Phillies acquire Garcia from White Sox

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

The Phillies acquired right hander Freddy Garcia from the White Sox in exchange for right-hander Gavin Floyd and minor-league left-hander Gio Gonzalez.

Garcia pitched 216 1/3 innings in 2006, earning a 17-9 record with a 4.53 ERA. In 2005, Garcia won 14 games and won a game in the World Series as the White Sox won their first title since 1917. Over his eight-year career, Garcia is 116-71 with a 4.01 ERA.

Floyd was 4-3 with a 7.29 ERA in 11 starts for the Phillies last season before being optioned to Triple-A on June 3.

White Sox sign Podsednik to 1-year deal

Monday, December 4th, 2006

Left fielder Scott Podsednik agreed to a one-year, $2.9 million contract with the Chicago White Sox, avoiding arbitration.

Podsednik batted .261 with three home runs, 45 RBIs and 40 stolen bases in 2006, becoming the fourth player in White Sox history to record back-to-back seasons with 40 steals. But the numbers represented a significant drop-off from a year earlier when he hit .290 and stole 59 bases, prompting widespread speculation the White Sox would let him go and find a new left fielder and leadoff batter.

Podsednik, a career .275 hitter, leads the major leagues with 169 steals over the last three seasons. He was an American League All-Star in 2005 after being acquired from Milwaukee and won Game 2 of the World Series with a walkoff home run.

White Sox close to dealing Garland

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

The White Sox are close to trading right-hander Jon Garland, according to a rival executive, and the Rangers appear to be the most logical fit. The Rangers pursued Garland at the general managers’ meetings in Naples, Fla., and White Sox G.M. Ken Williams is intrigued by several of the Rangers’ pitching prospects.

Minor-league left-hander John Danks likely would be part of any Rangers package for Garland, a sinker-baller whose style would adapt well to Texas’ hitter-friendly Ameriquest Field.

The Orioles and other clubs also have engaged the White Sox in talks about Garland. The White Sox have been seeking young pitching for one of their veteran starters.

A deal between the White Sox and Rangers also could be expanded to include White Sox center fielder Brian Anderson. The Rangers could lose center fielder Gary Matthews Jr. to free agency.
Garland, 27, is signed for $10 million in 2007 and $12 million in ’08. He has worked 211 or more innings in each of the past three seasons and won 18 games in each of the past two. However, his ERA rose from a career-best 3.50 in 2005 to 4.51 last season.

White Sox, Cubs swap relievers

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

The Chicago White Sox traded reliever Neal Cotts to the Cubs for reliever David Aardsma and minor league pitcher Carlos Vasquez on Thursday.

Cotts, who had a career year in 2005 while helping the White Sox win the World Series, went 1-2 last season with a 5.17 ERA. He had a career-high 70 relief appearances, but gave up 12 homers after yielding one in the previous season.

Cotts went 4-0 with a 1.94 ERA and won Game 2 of the World Series in 2005.
Aardsma was 3-0 with a 4.08 ERA in 45 relief appearances over four stints for the Cubs last season.

Vasquez, a 23-year-old left-handed pitcher, was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Cubs in 2000. He was 6-5 with a 2.75 ERA in 54 relief appearances between Single-A Daytona and Double-A West Tenn in 2006.

The trade between the clubs is the first since July 29, 1998 when the White Sox acquired pitcher Jon Garland in exchange for reliever Matt Karchner.

Monday, July 24th, 2006

The Chicago White Sox acquired right-handed reliever Mike MacDougal from the Kansas City Royals on Monday for minor league pitchers Tyler Lumsden and Daniel Cortes.

An All-Star in 2003, MacDougal was activated from the disabled list on July 13 after straining his right shoulder during spring training. He is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a save in four appearances.. The 29-year-old MacDougal was 21-for-25 in save situations last season.

Lumsden was 9-4 with a 2.69 ERA in 20 starts for Double-A Birmingham. Cortes was 3-9 with a 4.01 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 20 games (19 starts) with Single-A Kannapolis.

White Sox Close to getting Soriano

Monday, July 24th, 2006

The White Sox are “extremely close” to trading for Nationals outfielder Alfonso Soriano, a source close to the situation told ESPN The Magazine’s Tim Kurkjian. The Nationals have great interest in pitcher Brandon McCarthy.

The slugger, who is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season, said Sunday he wanted to remain in Washington but doubted he and the Nationals could agree to a contract extension before the deadline.

ChiSox Sign Garland – Contreras Wants BIG Money

Friday, December 30th, 2005

What is definitely shaping up to be a monster offseason for the Chicago White Sox, they went ahead and locked up SP Jon Garland to a 3 year $29 million dollar contract. To me, the money seems a little high for a guy that has really only had 1 1/2 good seasons, but worse case scenario, they overpaid for a consistent middle to bottom of the rotation starter.

On the other hand, Jose Contreras, who just got his act together this season after a miserable three years in the Bronx, wants Ace money, asking for a three year contract extension worth $11-$12 million per year. Yes, Contreras was great for them last year, but he does have a long history of sub-par performances and even though his bio says that he’s only 34, I think we all know he is probably somewhere around 38. With the intelligent moves that the White Sox front office has been making this offseason, my feeling is that they will either try to move him this year, or hold on to him through the season and let him be on his merry way.
