Reds acquire Conine from Phillies

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

The Reds acquired Jeff Conine from the Philadelphia Phillies for a pair of minor leaguers Thursday, giving them a right-handed hitter who can share a spot at first base and play the outfield. The 40-year-old Conine played the outfield and first base with Baltimore and Philadelphia last season, hitting .268 with 10 homers and 66 RBIs. The Phillies acquired him in an August trade. In exchange for Conine, the Phillies got infielder Brad Key and outfielder Javon Moran, both of whom played in the low minor leagues. To make room for Conine on their 40-man roster, the Reds designated infielder Brendan Harris for assignment to the minors.

Conine will make $2 million in 2007, the final year on his contract.

Weathers will remain with Reds

Monday, December 4th, 2006

The Cincinnati Reds continued to bolster their bullpen Monday, re-signing free-agent right-hander David Weathers. Weathers will receive a two-year deal worth approximately $5 million, pending results of a physical, which Weathers will take today.

The deal will keep Weathers in Cincinnati, where he has played the last two seasons appearing in 140 games. The contract also includes incentives that will increase the value of the deal if Weathers ends up closing games.

Interest in Weathers had been high and the reliever turned down three-year deals from a pair of teams to remain a Red.

Reds agree to deal with lefty reliever Stanton

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

ESPN’s Peter Gammons is reporting that Cincinnati and left-handed reliever Mike Stanton have agreed to a two-year contract. ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark reports that the contract also contains a vesting option for a third season.

The 39-year-old Stanton was 7-7 with eight saves and a 3.99 ERA in 82 appearances with the Nationals and Giants last season.

The Reds’ closer situation is unsettled with Eddie Guardado out for next season following elbow surgery and club saves leader David Weathers a free agent. Stanton is a possibility to fill that role.

Gonzalez, Reds agree to three-year, $14 million deal

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

Free agent shortstop Alex Gonzalez has negotiated a three-year, $14 million contract with the Cincinnati Reds, pending a physical, Gonzalez, a slick-fielding shortstop who replaced Edgar Renteria in Boston, is a nine-year veteran who batted .255 with 99 hits and 50 RBI last season for the Red Sox. He had a .985 fielding percentage in 111 games at shortstop in 2006.

He played in Boston under a one-year deal he signed after spending the first eight years of his big-league career with the Florida Marlins. He has a career batting average of .246 and a career fielding average of .970.

The Reds, who have been looking to upgrade their defense, started 2006 with Felipe Lopez at shortstop and ended with veteran Royce Clayton at short. Lopez was dealt to the Washington Nationals on July 13 as part of an eight-player trade that also sent Austin Kearns and Ryan Wagner to D.C. and brought back Clayton, Bill Bray, Brendan Harris and Gary Majewski.

The Reds had a .979 fielding percentage and committed 128 errors in 2006 — second-worst in the NL behind the Nationals in both categories.

Reds get reliever from Toronto

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

The Cincinnati Reds acquired left-hander Scott Schoeneweis from the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday for a player to be named or cash.

The move came two days after the Reds learned that left-handed reliever Kent Mercker will need reconstructive surgery on his left elbow. Mercker has a torn ligament and tendon in the elbow.

Schoeneweis is the seventh pitcher acquired in the last six weeks by the Reds, who have stayed in playoff contention partly by remaking their bullpen. A 5-0 loss in St. Louis on Tuesday night left Cincinnati in second place in the NL Central, 2 1/2 games behind the Cardinals.

The 32-year-old Schoeneweis went 2-2 with a 6.51 ERA in 55 games for the Blue Jays this season. He is 41-47 in his career with a 5.09 ERA in nine seasons with Toronto, the Angels and the White Sox.

Reds acquire Cormier to bolster bullpen

Monday, July 31st, 2006

The Reds, continuing efforts to bolster their bullpen, acquired left-hander Rheal Cormier from the Phillies on Monday for right-hander Justin Germano.

Cormier was 2-2 with a 1.59 ERA in 34 innings for the Phillies this season. He has been more effective against right-handed hittters, who are batting .197 against him, than left-handers, who are batting .259. As a player with 10 years of major-league service, five consecutively with the same team, Cormier had the right to block any trade.

Germano, 23, made two appearances for the Reds this season, including a start Saturday in which he pitched 52/3 innings against the Brewers. He was 8-6 with a 3.69 ERA for Class AAA Louisville, the Reds’ top affiliate.

Reds, Nationals make 8 Player Trade

Friday, July 14th, 2006

The Cincinnati Reds get Relievers Gary Majewski and Bill Bray, shortstop Royce Clayton, infielder Brendan Harris and pitching prospect Daryl Thompson. The 36-year-old Clayton, will take over at shortstop for Lopez, who made his first All-Star team last year.

The Nationals get right fielder Austin Kearns, shortstop Felipe Lopez, and reliever Ryan Wagner, a first-round draft pick in 2003.

At first glance it looks like the Nationals got the better end of the deal by far but the Reds have a shot at making the playoffs and they needed to make their bullpen better and they did that. Royce Clayton is also an upgrade defensively over Lopez.
