The Detroit Tigers have filled one of their prime offseason needs, acquiring catcher Gerald Laird from the Rangers for Double-A right-hander Guillermo Moscoso and a second prospect, according to a major-league source. The deal, to be announced Monday, figures to end any chance of the Tigers signing free-agent catcher Jason Varitek, who declined salary arbitration from the Red Sox on Sunday night.

Laird, a strong defensive catcher, is a .255 career hitter with a .306 on-base percentage. He earned $1.6 million last season in his first year of arbitration, and is two years from free agency.
The Tigers also are seeking an inexpensive solution at shortstop, a position in which they are considering free agents Adam Everett and Nick Punto, with Everett the apparent preference.

Moscoso, 25, was 2-3 with a 2.42 ERA at Single-A Lakeland last season and 3-1 with a 3.12 ERA at Double-A Erie, striking out 122 and walking only 21 in 86 2/3 innings.

The second prospect in the deal is a 17-year-old pitcher who spent last season in the Dominican Summer League, the source said.

One day after Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said he was “flabbergasted” by Gary Sheffield’s complaints about playing time, Sheffield was among several Tigers placed on waivers by the club Tuesday, according to a major league source.

Teams aren’t permitted to comment on the waiver process, so it’s possible the timing is coincidental. But there were indications that the Tigers floated Sheffield’s name in trade talks before the July 31 trading deadline. So it seems likely that Sheffield’s latest remarks have prompted them to see if interest in him may have picked up this month in the wake of a number of injuries to prominent players on several contenders.

Other teams would have until Thursday afternoon to place a claim on Sheffield, who has one year remaining on his contract (at $14 million) beyond this season. If he clears waivers, he could be traded to any of the other 29 teams. If he’s claimed, the Tigers then would have 48 hours to deal him to the club that claims him.

Sheffield is hitting .222 with 10 homers and 33 RBIs in 75 games. The 39-year-old Sheffield is a career .293 hitter with 490 home runs and 1,609 RBIs, ranking among the top 30 run-producers in baseball history.

The Tigers were among the 10 or more clubs that scouted Wednesday night’s game between the Blue Jays and Orioles, teams that already have made pitchers available on the market. Toronto right-hander A.J. Burnett started that game, but it’s not believed the Tigers are actively pursuing him. Burnett is making $12 million this year, and the Tigers are reluctant to add to what was a $138-million payroll Opening Day. Baltimore closer George Sherrill would be intriguing to the Tigers if Dolsi is unavailable for any length of time, but the price tag on Sherrill, a left-hander, is expected to be high. — Detroit Free Press

Garcia will likely throw for scouts between July 20 and 24, according to his agent, Peter Greenberg. By then, Greenberg hopes Garcia will be up to 100% strength. Garcia is currently working out in Miami and throwing off a mound at about 80% intensity, as he continues rehabilitating from shoulder surgery. Greenberg said in an e-mail that Garcia is throwing only fastballs and changeups now, but that curveballs could be added within the next week. — Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Tigers could have kept Curtis Granderson around for a while, retaining his talents with one-year deals until he became eligible for free agency after the 2011 season. The Tigers, though, don’t just wait around to make moves these days. Granderson and baseball’s busiest team agreed Monday to a $30.25 million, five-year contract that includes a club option for 2013 that could make the deal worth up to $43.25 million.

Granderson had a breakout season last year, hitting .302 with 23 homers and 74 RBIs along with 38 doubles, 23 triples and 26 stolen bases. He led the majors in triples with the highest total since Ty Cobb had one more in 1917. He joined Willie Mays and Frank “Wildfire” Schulte as the only players in major league history with 20 steals, 20 homers, 20 triples and 20 doubles. Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins became a part of the 20-20-20-20 club later in the season
Schulte was the first to accomplish the feat in 1911 while playing for the Chicago Cubs, and Mays did it in 1957 with the New York Giants.

In 373 games with the Tigers, he is hitting .280 with 50 homers, 162 RBIs, 232 runs, 76 doubles and 36 triples.

Granderson gets $1 million this year, $3.5 million in 2009, $5.5 million in 2010, $8.25 million in 2011 and $10 million in 2012. The Tigers have a $13 million option for 2013 with a $2 million buyout. Depending on criteria such as All-Star selection and postseason awards, the price of the option could escalate to $15 million.

Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers agreed Friday to a one-year contract worth $11.3 million, avoiding salary arbitration before the All-Star third baseman’s first season with the team. Cabrera, 24, can become a free agent after the 2009 season, but the Tigers hope to keep him long term.

In 157 games with the Marlins in 2007, Cabrera hit .320 with 91 runs scored, 38 doubles, two triples, 34 home runs and 119 RBI. Cabrera compiled a .313 batting average in five seasons with the club.

Detroit also agreed to a $780,000, one-year contract with pitcher Bobby Seay. The 29-year-old left-hander was 3-0 with a 2.33 ERA in 58 games with the Tigers last season. In 134 major league appearances, he has posted a 4-1 record and 3.97 ERA. He can make an additional $75,000 in performance bonuses: $20,000 for 55 games, $25,000 for 60 games and $30,000 for 63 games.
