Mike Hampton signs with Astros

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Oft-injured Mike Hampton finalized a one-year, $2 million deal with the Houston Astros, hoping to resurrect his career in the place where he became a prominent big league pitcher. The contract includes $2 million in performance bonuses.

Hampton spent six seasons with the Astros, ending in 1999 when he won a career-high 22 games and was an All-Star. He was traded to the Mets and won 15 games in 2000 before signing a $121 million, eight-year contract with Colorado. The big deal proved to be one on the worst free-agent signings ever, with Hampton going 56-52 with a 4.81 in just 147 starts for the Rockies and Atlanta, who acquired him after the 2002 season.

Hampton sat out the 2006 season after elbow ligament surgery and did not pitch in 2007 because of an oblique injury and an elbow problem that required a season-ending operation. Hampton went 3-4 with a 4.85 ERA in 13 starts for the Braves this year. At the end of the season, he expressed interest in returning the Astros.

Hampton would earn an addition $100,000 for 12 starts and each addition two starts through 30. He also would get $100,000 for pitching 100 innings and each addition 10 innings through 190.

Hampton is 141-105 with a 4.01 ERA. He began his major league career in Seattle in 1993, going 1-3 before being traded to Houston.

A day earlier, Houston agreed to re-sign reliever Doug Brocail for a 2.75 million, one-year deal.

Astros ger RP Hawkins from Yankees

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

The Yankees have traded reliever LaTroy Hawkins to the Astros for Class A second baseman Matt Cusick, according to major-league sources.

Hawkins was designated for assignment last Saturday after the Yankees acquired reliever Damaso Marte from the Pirates. He was 1-1 with a 5.71 ERA in 41 innings this season.

Cusick, 22, was batting .285 with nine home runs and 38 RBIs in 94 games for Class A Lexington. He was the Astros’ 10th-round pick in the 2007 draft, and the Astros’ No. 29 prospect according to Baseball America.

Astros get Wolf from Padres

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

The Houston Astros acquired pitcher Randy Wolf from San Diego on Tuesday in exchange for minor leaguer Chad Reinee.

Wolf, an NL All-Star in 2003, is 6-10 with a 4.74 ERA in 21 starts for the Padres this season. The 31-year-old is in his 10th season and will play for his fourth team. He previously played for Philadelphia (1999-2006) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (2007) before joining the Padres this season. The left-handed Wolf will start for the Astros in Milwaukee on Sunday, general manager Ed Wade said.

Wolf had Tommy John surgery in 2005 and missed the second half of the 2007 season with pain in his throwing shoulder. His 21 starts this season were tied for the major-league lead and Wade has been assured by athletic trainers that Wolf is healthy.

Wolf has lost six of his last seven starts. He gave up four runs on eight hits in Saturday’s 6-5 loss in St. Louis, his third straight road loss.

Reineke, a right-hander, is 5-9 with a 4.41 ERA in 19 starts for Triple-A Round Rock this season. He was originally selected by the Astros in the 13th round of the 2004 draft and he is 28-32 with a 3.72 ERA in five minor league seasons in the Houston system. He has yet to pitch in a major league game.

Wolf will become a free agent after this season. Wade said Wolf could earn up to $3.5 million this season with performance bonuses and the Astros may look to re-sign him for 2009.

RHP Chacon could join Astros rotation

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

The Astros, pursuing another veteran option for their rotation, are close to signing right-hander Shawn Chacon to a one-year contract, according to a major-league source. Chacon, 30, will join a group that includes right-handers Roy Oswalt, Woody Williams and Brandon Backe, along with left-hander Wandy Rodriguez.

The Astros depleted their rotation depth during the off-season, including three young minor-league starters, in trades for shortstop Miguel Tejada and closer Jose Valverde.

Sixty of Chacon’s 64 appearances with the Pirates last season were in relief, and he finished 5-4 with a 3.94 ERA. However, he has been used primarily a starter in five of his seven major-league seasons.

Chacon is 37-46 with a 4.89 ERA in 119 career starts and 6-12 with 36 saves and a 5.39 ERA in 135 career relief appearances. He has pitched for the Rockies and Yankees as well as the Pirates.

The 26-year-old Villarreal was traded by Atlanta for outfielder Josh Anderson last month. He was 2-2 with a save and a 4.24 ERA for the Braves last season.

Miguel Tejada is traded to Astros

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Former American League MVP Miguel Tejada was traded Wednesday from the Baltimore Orioles to the Houston Astros for five players. The Orioles got outfielder Luke Scott, pitchers Matt Albers, Troy Patton and Dennis Sarfate, and third baseman Michael Costanzo.

Tejada hit .296 with 18 home runs and 81 RBIs this season. At 31, he’s a four-time All-Star shortstop, but the Orioles were worried about his range.

Tejada had resisted efforts by the Orioles to move him over to third base. It’s uncertain where he’ll play for Houston, which has an unsettled left side of the infield.

Sources: O’s, Astros discuss Tejada

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

The Astros have had significant discussions with the Orioles about shortstop Miguel Tejada, but the two sides are not close to a deal, according to major-league sources. The Astros apparently believed a trade was possible Wednesday night, telling at least two other clubs that they were on the verge of a major deal. It is not clear whether their focus was Tejada.

Astros officials said Thursday morning that nothing was imminent, suggesting perhaps that the talks had faded. Other sources also indicated that the discussions were not in an advanced phase.

A Houston radio station reported Thursday that the Astros were close to acquiring Tejada for shortstop Adam Everett, second baseman Chris Burke and a pitcher.

Such a return would not be nearly enough for the Orioles, according to one source. Andy MacPhail, the team’s president of baseball operations, won’t need to be “overwhelmed” for Tejada, the source said, but will need a competitive offer.

The Astros’ interest in Tejada dates to July 2006, when they tried to acquire him for Roy Oswalt, only to have the deal quashed by Orioles owner Peter Angelos.

Everett was one reason Angelos vetoed the deal; the Astros included him in their offer for Tejada, and Angelos did not want him.
