Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

Free-agent first baseman Shea Hillenbrand has agreed to a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The New York Yankees had shown interest in Hillenbrand, but are now believed to be turning their attention toward Doug Mientkiewicz or Mark Loretta to fill their first base needs.

Hillenbrand, entering his seventh major league season, split last season between Toronto and San Francisco. His combined totals for 2006 included a .277 batting average with 21 home runs and 68 RBI in 520 at-bats.

For his career, Hillenbrand, 31, is a .287 hitter with 104 home runs and 459 RBI. He’s spent time with the Red Sox, Diamonbacks, Blue Jays and Giants.

Angels sign Gary Matthews Jr. for $50 million

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

The Angels have reached agreement with center fielder Gary Matthews Jr. on a five-year, $50 million contract. The 32-year-old Matthews, who still must pass a physical, is coming off a breakout season in which he batted .313 with 19 homers and 79 RBIs and played stellar defense for the Rangers. He likely will bat leadoff for the Angels and give them increased athleticism in center field, reducing the defensive burden on right fielder Vladimir Guerrero and left fielder Garret Anderson.

Prior to last season, Matthews was a career .249 hitter who had played for six teams in seven major-league seasons

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

The Los Angeles Angels traded disappointing right-hander Jeff Weaver to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night for minor league outfielder Terry Evans.

Weaver, 29, was designated for assignment by the Angels last Friday after going 3-10 with a 6.29 ERA in 16 starts this season. He signed an one-year, $8.3 million contract with Los Angeles as a free agent during the offseason.

Jeff Weaver went 14-11 with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, his second with the club. St. Louis will be his fifth league team following earlier stints with Detroit and the New York Yankees. He has a career record of 81-97 with an ERA of 4.55 in 225 starts.

Weaver allowed 114 hits, including 18 homers, while walking 21 and striking out 62 in 88 2-3 innings this season with the Angels. Opponents had a .309 average against him.

Evans, 24, was hitting .311 with seven homers and 20 RBIs in 21 games with Double-A Springfield. He began this season with Class A Palm Beach, hitting .307 with 15 homers and 45 RBIs in 60 games.

Wednesday, December 21st, 2005

The San Francisco Giants acquired outfielder Steve Finley from the Los Angeles Angels for third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo on Wednesday in a swap of former All-Stars who dropped off dramatically last season.

The 40-year-old Finley batted .222 with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs in 112 games last season for the Angels.

Alfonzo played in only 109 games last season, batting .277 with two home runs and 43 RBIs.

Angels add lefty Romero to pen

Saturday, December 10th, 2005

The Twins shipped the left-handed reliever to the Los Angeles Angels for minor-league infielder Alexi Casilla.

The 29-year-old Romero was 4-3 with a 3.47 ERA and had 48 strikeouts in 57 innings last season, but clashed with manager Ron Gardenhire and struggled to keep inherited runners from scoring.

The Angels were at the bottom in last season in LHP relief innings pitched so Reomero should help that.
