Brewers get Linebrink for 3 minor leaguers

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

In turnabout in trade philosophy, the Milwaukee Brewers acquired reliever Scott Linebrink from the San Diego Padres for three minor league pitchers on Wednesday, hoping to bolster their unexpected run at the playoffs.

Linebrink will be a setup man for closer Francisco Cordero, who has converted 32 of his 35 save chances.

The Padres acquired right-hander Will Inman, a third-round pick in June 2005; left-hander Steve Garrison, a 10th-round pick in the same draft; and 25-year-old left-hander Joe Thatcher.
The bullpen is one of the Brewers’ main concerns, in part because of injuries. Reliever Yovani Gallardo had to move into the starting rotation after Ben Sheets hurt a finger on his pitching hand earlier this month.

Dodgers get Clark from Brewers for Dessens

Monday, March 26th, 2007

The Los Angeles Dodgers, seeking a right-handed hitting outfielder because of a potential season-ending injury to Jason Repko, acquired Brady Clark and cash from the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday for reliever Elmer Dessens.

The 33-year-old Clark has a .278 career batting average over seven seasons. He hit .263 with four homers and 29 RBIs in 138 games last season – a year after batting .306 with 183 hits.

The Dodgers will pay Clark the $1.7 million they were set to pay Dessens, and the Brewers gave them $2.1 million to cover the difference from what Clark would have made in Milwaukee. Clark has appeared in 286 games in center field, 238 in right and 75 in left during his career.

The 36-year-old Dessens has a 46-59 record and 4.41 ERA with Pittsburgh, Arizona, Los Angeles and Kansas City. In parts of three seasons with the Dodgers, he appeared in 59 games, six of them starts, and went 2-3 with a 3.74 ERA in 108 2-3 innings.

Suppan signs four-year deal with Brewers

Sunday, December 24th, 2006

Jeff Suppan, the MVP of the NL championship series for the St. Louis Cardinals this season, has signed a four-year free agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers said Sunday they also have an option for a fifth year.

The 31-year-old right-hander went 12-7 with a 4.12 ERA for St. Louis last season, and was 1-1 in four postseason starts — including a win in Game 3 and seven solid innings in Game 7 of the NLCS against the New York Mets.

Brewers make 4-year contract offer to Suppan

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

The Brewers have offered a four-year contract to free-agent pitcher Jeff Suppan. The offer is for between $36 million and $40 million.

Suppan, a 31-year-old right-hander, was 12-7 with a 4.12 ERA for St. Louis last season and was 1-1 in four postseason starts. Suppan has a career record of 12-2 with a 3.29 ERA against Milwaukee.

Suppan was brilliant in helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets before the team went on and swept Detroit in the World Series. He pitched eight shutout innings to win Game 3, then allowed one run over seven innings in Game 7, which the Cardinals won 3-1 on Yadier Molina’s ninth-inning homer.

Counsell Returns to Brewers

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

Craig Counsell decided he’d rather be a backup for his hometown team than a starter someplace else. Counsell played for Milwaukee in 2004. The 36-year-old spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Counsell returned to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday, agreeing to a $6 million, two-year contract. Counsell is a native of the Milwaukee area and played for the Brewers in 2004.

He drew interest from the San Diego Padres, potentially as a starting second baseman. But his decision became easy when Brewers general manager Doug Melvin called.

A member of two World Series championship teams, Counsell has a .260 career batting average of with 31 home runs, 283 RBI and 90 stolen bases over 11 major league seasons with Colorado (1995, 97), Florida (1997-99), Los Angeles (1999), Arizona (2000-03, 2005-06) and Milwaukee (2004).

Diamondbacks, Brewers involved in six-player swap

Saturday, November 25th, 2006

The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired left-hander Doug Davis from Milwaukee on Saturday in a six-player deal that sent catcher Johnny Estrada to the Brewers. Right-handers Greg Aquino and Claudio Vargas also went to Milwaukee, while the Diamondbacks obtained a pair of youngsters, left-hander Dana Eveland and outfielder Dave Krynzel.

The 31-year-old Davis is 62-63 with a 4.35 ERA in eight major league seasons. He was 11-11 with a 4.91 ERA in 34 starts last season with Milwaukee and, like Estrada, is arbitration eligible.

The 30-year-old Estrada hit .301 with 11 home runs and 71 RBIs during his only season with Arizona. The switch-hitting former All-Star had the sixth-best batting average among NL catchers.

Brewers trade Carlos Lee to Rangers

Friday, July 28th, 2006

The Brewers are sending Lee, minor league outfield prospect Nelson Cruz to the Rangers for relief pitcher Francisco Cordero and outfielders Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix.

Lee was the Brewers’ team leader with 28 home runs and 81 RBI.

Cordero started the season as the Rangers’ closer, but was replaced by Akinori Otsuka in late April after blowing three saves.
