Cubs trade Nevin to Twins

The Minnesota Twins acquired first baseman Phil Nevin and cash from the Chicago Cubs on Thursday for a player to be named, a deal made on the final day players must be in an organization to be eligible for postseason play.

The 35-year-old Nevin was already dealt once this season, moving from the Texas Rangers to the Cubs on May 31 for utility player Jerry Hairston Jr. Nevin was batting .274 with 12 homers and 33 RBI in 179 at-bats for Chicago.

Reds get Kyle Lohse from Minnesota

In exchange for Lohse, the Reds sent 22-year-old right-hander Zach Ward to the Twins.

The 27-year-old Lohse is 2-5 with a 7.07 ERA in eight starts and 14 relief appearances. In his six-year major league career, all with the Twins, Lohse is 51-57 with a 4.88 ERA, and has made five postseason appearances.

Ward was the Reds’ third-round pick in 2005, and was 7-0 with a 2.29 ERA in 18 starts and two relief appearances for Class A Dayton.

The Reds have done a great job improving their bullpen.
