Phillies, Padres hoping to land Jenkins

Friday, December 14th, 2007

The Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres have emerged as the leading contenders for free-agent outfielder Geoff Jenkins.

The Padres, short on outfielders, also are trying to re-sign free-agent center fielder Mike Cameron, who continues to talk with other clubs.

Jenkins, a left-handed hitter, could fit into a left-field platoon with Scott Hairston. The Padres also have talked about moving their top prospect, third baseman Chase Headley, to left.

The Phillies likely would use Jenkins in a right-field platoon with Jayson Werth. Shane Victorino will take over in center, replacing Aaron Rowand, who signed with the Giants as a free agent.

Jenkins, 33, batted .255 with 21 home runs and 64 RBIs last season for the Milwaukee Brewers, the only team for which he had played before becoming a free agent for the first time.

A veteran of 10 major-league seasons, Jenkins is a career .277 hitter with 212 career home runs. The Tampa Bay Rays showed interest in him before signing free agent Cliff Floyd.

Rowand leaves Phillies for Giants

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Aaron Rowand agreed to a five-year contract with the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, giving the club the starting center fielder it sought this winter. The 30-year-old Rowand is expected to bat fifth for San Francisco after spending the last two seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies. He is coming off his best season yet, earning his first Gold Glove award and All-Star selection while helping the Phillies to the NL East title. He batted .309 with 27 home runs and career bests of 89 RBIs, 105 runs, 189 hits, 45 doubles in 161 games.

While manager Bruce Bochy had said Rajai Davis would get a chance to earn the job come spring training, Rowand was brought in to start in center. That means Dave Roberts likely will shift from center to left field to replace departed home run king Barry Bonds, Randy Winn will stay put in right while Davis and some of the other young outfielders share time in a reserve role.

Phils re-sign relief pitcher Romero

Monday, November 12th, 2007

The Phillies, continuing to fortify their pitching staff, have re-signed free-agent left-hander J.C. Romero to a three-year, $12 million contract. The deal includes a club option for a fourth year that could bring the total value of the deal to $16.75 million.

Romero would continue in the role he filled after joining the Phillies last season, joining right-handers Ryan Madson and Tom Gordon and newly acquired closer Brad Lidge in the late innings.

The 30-year-old left-hander went 2-2 with one save and a 1.92 ERA in 74 games with the Phillies and Boston Red Sox last season. Romero had a 3.15 ERA in 23 games with Boston before being released on June 18.

Romero had a 1.24 ERA in 51 games with the Phillies. He worked 15 2-3 scoreless innings in his last 20 appearances of the regular season and went 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three playoff games.

Phils continue to upgrade pitching

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

The Phillies, one day after acquiring right-hander Kyle Lohse to upgrade their rotation, made a move to supplement their bullpen Tuesday, obtaining Class AAA right-hander Julio Mateo from the Mariners. Mateo, who turns 30 on Thursday, figures to replace righty Ryan Madson, who suffered a strained right shoulder Sunday. The Phillies’ bullpen recently was bolstered by the returns of right-handers Tom Gordon and Brett Myers from injuries.

In return, the Phillies sent infielder Jesus Merchan from Double-A Reading to Seattle.

Mateo, who turns 30 on Thursday, is 18-12 with two saves and a 3.68 ERA in 219 games over six seasons in Seattle. He had an 0.79 ERA in 24 games at Triple-A Tacoma, allowing just three earned runs in 34 1/3 innings. Opponents batted just .200 against him.

Phillies get 2B Iguchi from White Sox

Friday, July 27th, 2007

The Phillies have acquired White Sox second baseman Tadahito Iguchi for Class A right-hander Michael Dubee.

Iguchi will be a temporary replacement for the injured Chase Utley, who will miss up to a month after undergoing surgery Friday morning to repair a broken right hand.

Dubee is the son of Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee.

Iguchi, 32, is a free agent at the end of the season. The Phillies could try to use him as a utility man after Utley returns.

Iguchi is batting .251 with six homers and 31 RBIs

Mesa signs with Phils

Friday, June 8th, 2007

Veteran Jose Mesa has been signed by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Mesa, who has been in the majors since 1987, was released by the Tigers on Sunday.

Mesa, who is 107-95 with 320 saves and a 4.33 ERA, was the Phillies’ closer from 2001-03.
Philadelphia was one of the teams most interested in Troy Pervical, who inked a minor-league deal with the Cardinals on Friday.

Phils give Howard 1-year, $900K deal

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

Ryan Howard got a raise. He’s still one of the biggest bargains in baseball, though. The Philadelphia Phillies renewed the NL MVP’s contract Friday, giving the first baseman a $900,000 salary after the sides failed to agree on a long-term deal. The figure matches the highest base salary in a one-year contract for a player not eligible for arbitration

Howard, who had a $355,000 salary last year, said he was disappointed the sides couldn’t reach a long-term deal, but he’s ready to start the season.

Howard, who hit .313 with 58 home runs and 149 RBIs last season, switched agents during the offseason and is now represented by Casey Close.

The highest previous one-year contract for a player with less than two years of service had been awarded to Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood, who made $690,000 in 2002.

Alfonseca agrees to 1-year deal with Phillies

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Right-hander Antonio Alfonseca agreed to a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. Alfonseca agreed to the major league minimum of $380,000, and if he appears on the regular-season roster, his base salary will be increased to $700,000.

Once a dominant closer with Florida, Alfonseca has struggled with injuries in recent seasons.

In 10 seasons in the majors, Alfonseca is 30-35 with 121 saves and a 3.99 ERA in 531 games with four teams, including two stints with Florida.

Phillies sign RHP Madson to deal

Monday, January 15th, 2007

The Phillies signed right-hander Ryan Madson to a $1.1 million, one-year contract on Sunday, avoiding arbitration with the reliever. The 26-year-old Madson went 11-9 with two saves and a 5.69 ERA in 50 games, including 17 starts, for the Phillies in 2006. He finished second on the team in wins, third in innings pitched (134.1) and fourth in strikeouts (99), establishing career highs in all of those categories. Madson went 3-4 with a 4.50 ERA out of the bullpen.

Reds acquire Conine from Phillies

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

The Reds acquired Jeff Conine from the Philadelphia Phillies for a pair of minor leaguers Thursday, giving them a right-handed hitter who can share a spot at first base and play the outfield. The 40-year-old Conine played the outfield and first base with Baltimore and Philadelphia last season, hitting .268 with 10 homers and 66 RBIs. The Phillies acquired him in an August trade. In exchange for Conine, the Phillies got infielder Brad Key and outfielder Javon Moran, both of whom played in the low minor leagues. To make room for Conine on their 40-man roster, the Reds designated infielder Brendan Harris for assignment to the minors.

Conine will make $2 million in 2007, the final year on his contract.
