Wells contemplates Padres’ offer

Friday, January 19th, 2007

The Padres offered free-agent left-hander David Wells a one-year contract Wednesday. The offer includes a modest base salary plus appearance-based incentives, according to a major-league source. The two sides plan to resume discussions Thursday; the Padres intend to explore other options if they can not sign the 43-year-old Wells by the end of the week.

The Blue Jays are interested in Wells if his talks with the Padres collapse, but Wells almost certainly would desire a higher salary to leave his hometown team.

Wells underwent surgery on his right knee after the ’05 season and missed six weeks early last season due to lingering knee soreness. The pitcher, however, finished strong, going 3-4 with a 3.03 ERA in his final 10 regular-season starts for the Red Sox and Padres. Wells is 230-148 lifetime with a 4.07 ERA.

Pitch for Johnson better from Padres

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

The San Diego Padres have made a more attractive offer for Randy Johnson than the Arizona Diamondbacks, but the Yankees will trade Johnson only if they consider it a good baseball move.

The Padres were believed not to be close to an agreement with the Yankees and reluctant to absorb Johnson’s $16 million salary ($1.5 million deferred without interest) in 2007.

While the Yankees might just be hoping the Diamondbacks increase their offer, Arizona is said to be waiting for a response from the Yankees and perhaps hoping that Johnson uses his trade-veto power in their favor.

Teams have asked San Diego about setup man Scott Linebrink all year, and if the Padres are now willing to move him, that could facilitate a deal with the Yankees. Linebrink, 30, had a 3.57 ERA in 73 appearances last season. Since San Diego claimed him off waivers in May 2003, he has gone 14-9 with a 2.57 ERA over 262 games.

San Francisco has also been involved in talks, and the Yankees official said two more teams he would not identify entered the derby yesterday (the two Los Angeles franchises fit Johnson’s desire to be closer to his Phoenix-area home).

Marcus Giles close to joining Padres

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

Free-agent second baseman Marcus Giles is expected to sign with the Padres early this week, joining his older brother, right fielder Brian Giles. Marcus, 28, likely will agree to a one-year deal and possibly a club option. His salary will be significantly less than the $5.5 million that he might have earned in salary arbitration with the Braves, who declined to offer him a contract. The short-term deal will give Marcus a chance to re-establish his value as he tries to rebound from his worst offensive season as a regular. It also gives him the opportunity to return home to San Diego and become major-league teammates with Brian, 35, for the first time.

Marcus batted .262 last season with 11 homers and 60 RBIs, struggling after the Braves moved him to the leadoff spot in place of the departed Rafael Furcal. He is a career .285 hitter with an .809 lifetime on-base/slugging percentage, healthy numbers for a second baseman.

Padres, Maddux close to a deal

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

The Padres’ negotiations with free-agent right-hander Greg Maddux are in the “dotting-the-i’s-and-crossing-the-t’s stage,” according to a source close to the negotiations.

The Padres are offering Maddux, 40, a one-year contract with a club option for 2008, according to a major-league source. The remaining question is the amount of guaranteed money that Maddux would receive beyond the first year, the source said.

Maddux, who has a home in the San Diego area, has long wanted to pitch for the Padres. He was 15-14 with a 4.20 ERA for the Cubs and Dodgers last season, and has 333 career victories.

Padres interested in signing Bonds

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

The Padres, one of the Giants’ NL West rivals, have expressed interest in Bonds, according to a major-league source.

Bonds’ agent, Jeff Borris, refused to confirm the identities of any teams pursuing Bonds, but said the interest in his client was growing.

The A’s, who are still trying to re-sign free-agent designated hitter Frank Thomas, could be another possibility for Bonds.

The threat of Bonds joining the Padres, the two-time defending NL West champions, or the A’s, who also play in the Bay Area, could spur the Giants to intensify their efforts to re-sign their controversial left fielder.

Mets acquire OF Ben Johnson from Padres

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

The Mets added another outfielder to their left-field mix Wednesday, acquiring Ben Johnson and right-hander Jon Adkins from the Padres for right-hander Heath Bell and left-hander Royce Ring.

The Mets, who are not actively trying to re-sign free-agent left fielder Cliff Floyd, entered the general managers’ meetings with Endy Chavez and Lastings Milledge as their options in left.

The additions of Bell and Ring increase the Padres’ bullpen depth at a time when they are entertaining offers for right-hander Scott Linebrink.

Indians get Barfield from Padres

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

Not wanting to risk striking out in free agency, the Cleveland Indians found an everyday second baseman the conventional way, acquiring Josh Barfield in a trade with the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.

The Indians sent infielder Kevin Kouzmanoff, their minor league player of the year, and right-hander Andrew Brown to San Diego for the 23-year-old Barfield, who played in 150 games as a rookie last season.

The move could potentially clear the way for the Padres to acquire Marcus Giles from the Atlanta Braves. As FOXSports.com reported previously, Giles was interested in teaming up in San Diego with his brother, Brian. So much so, in fact, that he was willing to move to third base to do so. But now that the Padres have moved Barfield, such a move wouldn’t be necessary.

In addition, Barfield’s .987 fielding percentage – he had nine errors in 684 total chances – was third best among NL second basemen. One of the Indians’ biggest deficiencies last season was their horrid defense up the middle.

David Wells back to the Padres

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

The Padres won the last-minute sweepstakes for Wells, acquiring the veteran left-hander from the Red Sox on Thursday in exchange for a player to be named or cash. The player is Class AAA catcher George Kottaras.

Wells, a native of San Diego, pitched for the Padres in 2004, then signed with the Red Sox as a free agent after that season. He spent two months on the disabled list with right knee soreness earlier this season but was 2-2 with a 2.65 ERA in five August starts.

If Wells stays healthy, he will bring vast postseason experience to a rotation that already includes right-handers Jake Peavy and Woody Williams and left-hander Chris Young. In 26 career postseason appearances — 16 starts — Wells is 10-4 with a 3.15 ERA.

Padres get Todd Walker from Cubs

Monday, July 31st, 2006

The San Diego Padres acquired infielder Todd Walker from the Chicago Cubs for Jose Ceda, a 19-year-old right-handed pitcher from the Dominican Republic.

Walker, who has played both second and first base for the Cubs this season, is batting .277 with six home runs and 40 RBI in 2006.

Padres target Ensberg, Maddux

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Astros third baseman Morgan Ensberg remains the Padres’ primary trade target, but Cubs right-hander Greg Maddux could represent Plan B. To obtain Maddux, the Padres likely would need to outbid the Dodgers, who are increasing their efforts to land the future Hall of Famer and possess a greater number of trade chips.

The Padres’ plans hinge on two unrelated scenarios — the prognosis for right-hander Chan Ho Park, who went on the disabled list Sunday, and the Astros’ pursuit of Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada.

One possible trade would send Ensberg to the Padres for Scott Linebrink. The Astros would then send Lidge to the Rangers for Blalock.
