Mariners in Santana Mix?

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

As the stalemate lingers in the Red Sox’s pursuit of Twins left-hander Johan Santana, the possibility increases that other teams could enter the mix.

The Angels continue to insist that they are not pursuing Santana. The Mets’ ability to satisfy the Twins is in question because they say they will not trade Jose Reyes. But the Mariners, a team that is trying to add two starting pitchers, do not hide their interest.

That interest only figures to intensify if the Mariners fail to win the intense competition for Japanese free-agent right-hander Hiroki Kuroda.

The Mariners, rival executives say, are intent on making a splash and acquiring a big-name starting pitcher, with Orioles lefty Erik Bedard another potential target.

Still, questions remain about a possible run at Santana:

Are the Mariners willing to offer the Twins a package built around outfielder Adam Jones and right-hander Brandon Morrow? Jones, scouts believe, could be the next Torii Hunter, but the Mariners have indicated they would trade him for the right pitcher.

Are the Mariners willing to pay Santana a minimum of $20 million per season over six or seven years? That would be the price to persuade Santana to waive his no-trade clause.

Is Santana willing to sign with the Mariners? He might prefer to follow the example of Hunter, who signed with the Angels, and go to a market larger than Seattle.

The Red Sox still appear to be the most likely match for the Twins, but while the teams are maintaining a healthy dialogue, a source said they “are just not matching up right now.”

Ichiro signs $90 million, five-year contract extension

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

The Seattle leadoff man signed a $90 million, five-year contract extension Friday. The deal ensures Seattle, enjoying its best season in four years, will not lose its franchise cornerstone to free agency this fall. Instead, the Mariners will keep the seven-time All-Star and perennial Gold Glove outfielder under contract until age 39.

Suzuki led the majors with 128 hits going into Friday night’s game against Detroit. He was batting .355 with five home runs and 39 RBIs, and had stolen 23 bases.

Mariners leading contender to land Jeff Weaver

Friday, January 26th, 2007

In a blow to the World Series champion Cardinals, the Mariners are close to signing free-agent right-hander Jeff Weaver to a one-year contract. Weaver, 30, is declining to pursue a two-year deal because of his desire to re-enter the free-agent market after next season, according to a source close to the negotiations. Weaver would be the third starter acquired by the Mariners this off-season, joining right-hander Miguel Batista, who signed a three-year, $25 million free-agent contract, and left-hander Horacio Ramirez, who arrived in a trade from the Braves.

The Cardinals, operating under the premise that they are out of the running for Weaver, will not attempt to acquire another starting pitcher, a major-league source said.

Reitsma, Mariners agree to deal

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

The Mariners have agreed with the former Atlanta Braves closer on a $2.05 million, one-year contract Friday to become their top setup man. The right-hander, who turned 29 last week, had elbow surgery that ended his brief stint as Braves closer six months ago. The procedure was performed to cut a rare muscle that had wrapped around a nerve, causing Reitsma’s hand to go numb. He gets $1.35 million this year and can earn additional bonuses based on appearances and games finished. Seattle has a $2.7 million option for 2008 with a $700,000 buyout.
All without having thrown a pitch in half a year. Reitsma made $2.75 million last year.

Vidro likely to become Mariners’ DH

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

The Mariners have acquired second baseman Jose Vidro from the Nationals for outfielder Chris Snelling and right-hander Emiliano Fruto. The Mariners are set at second with Jose Lopez, but their DHs had the worst on-base/slugging percentage in the American League last season.

In 126 games last season, he batted .289 with a .348 on-base percentage, seven homers and 47 RBIs.

The Mariners will pay $12 million of the $16 million remaining on Vidro’s contract, according to the Washington Post. Vidro is signed for $7.5 million next season and $8.5 million in 2008.

Snelling, 25, made his major-league debut in 2002, but has appeared in only 59 career games due to a variety of injuries.

Fruto, 22, pitched in 23 games in relief for the Mariners as a rookie last season, going 2-2 with a 5.50 ERA in 36 innings.

Mariners on verge of deal with Batista

Monday, December 11th, 2006

Free-agent right-hander Miguel Batista is on the verge of signing a three-year contract with the Seattle Mariners. The Royals have been told that Batista will sign with another club, major-league sources say, and it is believed that the Cardinals also have been eliminated from the bidding.

The Mariners, Royals and Cardinals were believed to be the three finalists for Batista, though the Rangers and Mets are among the other clubs that have shown interest.

The Royals made Batista a three-year, $24 million offer. The winning bid figures to be higher.

Mariners to bring in Guillen to solidify outfield

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

Outfielder Jose Guillen and the Seattle Mariners have reached agreement on a one-year, $5 million contract. The contract also includes the possibility of another $3 million in performance-based bonuses. The deal has a $9 million option for the 2008 season.

Guillen, 30, batted .216 with nine home runs and 40 RBI with the Washington Nationals in 2006 but played in only 69 games because of an elbow injury that required reconstructive surgery at the end of the season. Guillen hit .294 with 27 homers and 104 RBI in 148 games with the Anaheim Angels in 2004.

Mariners acquire 1B Broussard from Indians

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

The Seattle Mariners acquired first baseman Ben Broussard from the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday for minor league outfielder Shin-Soo Choo.

Broussard hit .321 with 13 home runs and 46 RBIs in 88 games with the Indians, but was spotty defensively and committed seven errors. Cleveland will send cash to the Mariners to cover a portion of Broussard’s salary. The Indians will receive a player to be named by Aug. 31 to complete the deal.

Choo has spent most of this season at Triple-A Tacoma where he hit .323 with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs. He played in four games for Seattle between July 3-13, going 1-for-11. The lefty hitter will join the Indians immediately and start in right field against right-handed pitching. He also will spend some time in left field, Shapiro said.

Reds acquire Guardado from Mariners

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

Trying to bolster their struggling bullpen, the Cincinnati Reds acquired Eddie Guardado and cash from the Seattle Mariners on Thursday for minor league pitcher Travis Chick.

The 35-year-old Guardado had 36 saves with a 2.72 ERA in 58 games for the Mariners last season. He was an All-Star with the Twins in 2002 and 2003.

But this year, the normally reliable reliever known as “Everyday Eddie” struggled and was demoted from the closer’s role in May after blowing three save chances. Guardado was 1-3 with five saves and a 5.48 ERA, and was serving as a setup man for J.J. Putz.

The 21-year-old Chick was 4-5 with a 4.61 ERA for Double-A Chattanooga. The Reds acquired the righty from the San Diego organization last July in a deal for third baseman Joe Randa.

Mariners Acquire Perez from Indians

Friday, June 30th, 2006

The Mariners have acquired first baseman/designated hitter Eduardo Perez from the Indians.

Perez, 36, was batting .303 for the Indians with eight homers and 22 RBIs in 99 at-bats.
In exchange, the Indians received Triple-A infielder Asdrubal Cabrera.

The Mariners rank next-to-last in on-base/slugging percentage from the DH spot. Perez figures to platoon with Carl Everett, a switch-hitter who has performed better from the left side.

Cabrera, 20, was assigned to Triple-A Buffalo; the Indians view him as a legitimate prospect at second base or shortstop.

The Indians promoted Triple-A first baseman Ryan Garko to replace Perez on their major-league roster.
