McCarthy goes from White Sox to Rangers

Saturday, December 23rd, 2006

Texas acquired right-hander Brandon McCarthy from the Chicago White Sox in a five-player deal Saturday in which the Rangers gave up their 2003 first-round pick. John Danks, the ninth overall pick three years ago, and fellow right-handers Nick Masset and Jacob Rasner were sent to Chicago for McCarthy and outfielder David Paisano.

The 23-year-old McCarthy already has 65 major league appearances (12 starts), and is 7-9 with a 4.39 ERA. He has 117 career strikeouts while walking only 50 batters in 151 2-3 innings. McCarthy worked primarily out of the bullpen for the first time last season, and was 10th in the AL with 75 1-3 innings worked in relief. The Rangers plan to use him as a starter.

Danks split last season between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma, where he combined to go 9-9 with a 4.24 ERA in 27 games (26 starts). He has a career minor league record of 21-30 with a 4.20 ERA in 92 games (82 starts).

Masset made his major league debut last year with Texas, with no record and a 4.15 ERA in eight relief appearances. Rasner spent the entire 2006 season at Class-A Clinton, going 6-16 with a 5.41 ERA in 27 starts.

The 18-year-old Paisano appeared in 52 games for the White Sox Venezuelan Summer League team in 2006 and batted .338 with no home runs and 17 RBI.

Rangers, Gagne reach preliminary agreement

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

One day after reportedly making an offer to free-agent left-hander Barry Zito, the Rangers have reached preliminary agreement with another Scott Boras client, free-agent closer Eric Gagne, on a one-year, $6 million contract. The deal, which likely is pending a physical, is expected to include approximately $5 million in appearance incentives, bringing the possible total to $11 million, major-league sources said.

Gagne, who turns 31 on Jan. 7, has pitched in only 16 games the past two seasons while undergoing two elbow operations and back surgery. He is expected to be ready by spring training.

Gagne, a three-time All-Star, holds the major-league record of 84 consecutive saves. His best season was in 2003, when he converted all 55 of his save opportunities and posted a 1.20 ERA en route to the NL Cy Young Award.

Zito, who is reportedly also being courted by the Giants and Mets, was 16-10 last season witih a 3.83 ERA for the A’s. He has spent his entire seven-year career in Oakland, winning a Cy Young award in 2002.

Rangers, Lofton agree to deal

Monday, December 11th, 2006

Free agent Kenny Lofton reached a preliminary agreement Monday on a one-year deal with the Texas Rangers worth about $6 million. The deal for the center fielder was confirmed by a person familiar with the negotiations. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement was pending a physical on the 39-year-old Lofton, a six-time All-Star.

Lofton is expected to fill the void in the Rangers lineup created when All-Star center fielder Gary Matthews Jr.

Lofton, who turns 40 on May 31, hit .301 with 32 steals and 41 RBIs for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season but was just 1-for-13 (.077) as the Dodgers were swept by the New York Mets in the first round of the playoffs.

Padilla agrees to stay with Rangers

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

Pitcher Vicente Padilla is staying with the Texas Rangers, agreeing to a $33.75 million, three-year contract Saturday that includes a $12 million club option for 2010.

The signing keeps one of the top free-agent starters with a team desperate for pitching. Padilla went 15-10 with a 4.50 ERA.

Padilla threw 200 innings and set a career high for wins. After beginning his career with Arizona, the 29-year-old right-hander pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies from 2000-05, making the NL All-Star team in 2002.

Rangers have interest in Mulder

Friday, December 8th, 2006

Free-agent left-hander Mark Mulder plans to visit Texas and meet with owner Tom Hicks on Tuesday.

Mulder, 29, has drawn interest from numerous teams, even though he missed the end of the 2006 season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery to repair a partial tear in his left rotator cuff in September and might not be ready to pitch until the middle of the season. For that reason, he likely will command a short-term deal with significant incentives, increasing his appeal in an escalating free-agent market.

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Wells has appeared in just seven games this season after undergoing surgery in March to repair a blocked artery in his pitching arm.

He picked up his first win in almost 10 months Friday, throwing seven innings of shutout baseball against the Giants, allowing just five hits and three walks.

Despite the surgery — and his 1-5 record with a 6.69 ERA — Wells had been targeted by several teams as the deadline approached. Both the Red Sox and the Mets had reportedly expressed an interest.
