The Orioles send catcher Javy Lopez to the Red Sox for a player to be named later as well as cash considerations.
The Orioles, who will get a mid-level prospect in return, are expected to include a little over $1 million to Boston to help offset Lopez’s remaining salary. The 35-year-old, who cleared waivers Thursday, still has $2.75 million remaining on the three-year, $22.5 million contract he signed with Baltimore before the ’04 season.
After losing his starting catching job when the Orioles signed Ramon Hernandez before the season, Lopez has campaigned for a trade and the organization tried to grant him his wish, but found little interest. When Monday’s trade deadline passed with him still on the Orioles, Lopez told reporters that he wanted to be released.
Boston is in need of a catcher because Jason Varitek is expected to be out for about a month after knee surgery Thursday.
