Giants won’t invite Bonds back in ’08

Monday, September 24th, 2007

The Giants told Bonds they will not bring him back next season, ending an era in which he became all-time home run champion and a lightning rod for the steroids debate in baseball. Shadowed by steroid speculation for the past few years, Bonds has hit 28 homers this season, raising his career total to 762. The seven-time NL MVP is batting .279 with 66 RBIs.

Bonds needs 65 hits to reach the 3,000-hit plateau.

After parting ways with Bonds, San Francisco will be free to scrap a win-now philosophy in which Sabean surrounded the slugger with aging veterans every year to maximize Bonds’ chances to win his first championship. San Francisco reached the World Series in 2002, but hasn’t been back to the postseason since 2003.

Bonds agrees to deal, stays with Giants

Friday, December 8th, 2006

Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants reached agreement on a $16 million, one-year contract Thursday night that will keep the controversial slugger in the Bay Area to take aim at baseball’s home run record. The deal includes four performance bonuses that could make the pact worth a total of $20 million.

A’s showing interest in free agent Bonds

Friday, November 17th, 2006

The Oakland Athletics need a designated hitter, and they aren’t going far for one potential candidate to fill the spot: Barry Bonds. A’s general manager Billy Beane has had conversations with Bonds’ agent Jeff Borris about the 42-year-old slugger, who has played the past 14 seasons with San Francisco. Oakland lost Frank Thomas on Friday when he finalized an $18.12 million, two-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays.

The seven-time NL MVP has said he would like to play his 22nd and perhaps final season for the Giants and finish his career in San Francisco.

If the A’s couldn’t keep Thomas, how would they possibly be able to afford to sign Bonds — which makes a move by Bonds across San Francisco Bay to the American League appear to be a longshot.

Padres interested in signing Bonds

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

The Padres, one of the Giants’ NL West rivals, have expressed interest in Bonds, according to a major-league source.

Bonds’ agent, Jeff Borris, refused to confirm the identities of any teams pursuing Bonds, but said the interest in his client was growing.

The A’s, who are still trying to re-sign free-agent designated hitter Frank Thomas, could be another possibility for Bonds.

The threat of Bonds joining the Padres, the two-time defending NL West champions, or the A’s, who also play in the Bay Area, could spur the Giants to intensify their efforts to re-sign their controversial left fielder.

Bonds, Thomas, Nomar file for free agency

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

One day after the World Series ended, baseball’s business season began Saturday when San Francisco’s Barry Bonds, Oakland’s Frank Thomas and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Noma Garciaparra headed 59 players who filed for free agency.

Oakland pitcher Barry Zito and Washington’s Alfonso Soriano are the biggest names available in this year’s free-agent class. Approximately 200 players are eligible to file by the Nov. 11 deadline, and free agents can start talking money with all teams the following day.
