Marlins pursuing Fuentes

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Add the Marlins to the list of teams pursuing Brian Fuentes, the Rockies’ left-handed closer.

The Marlins, who are far more focused on acquiring bullpen help than adding a veteran catcher, are expressing interest in all of the top available relievers, according to major-league sources.

Catching is indeed an area of need for the Marlins, but Matt Treanor, recovering from a strained left hip, is close to beginning a rehabilitation assignment. The Marlins would rather go with Treanor and rookie John Baker than pick up a veteran such as the Blue Jays’ Gregg Zaun or Reds’ Paul Bako, sources say.

As for Fuentes, rival teams continue to say that the Rockies’ price is high for a pitcher who will be a free agent at the end of the season. The Rockies counter that Fuentes is a three-time All-Star who is on a roll. Fuentes, who turns 33 on Aug. 9, has pitched seven hitless, scoreless innings in July, striking out 13, walking none.

The Rays, Cardinals, Phillies, Red Sox, Mets and Yankees are among the other clubs that have shown interest in Fuentes

Red Sox eye Rockies Fuentes and A’s Street

Monday, July 21st, 2008

The arrival of Justin Masterson will be watched closely on a number of levels. If he succeeds, it could prevent the Red Sox from trading for a reliever at the cost of top prospects. Colorado’s Brian Fuentes and Oakland’s Huston Street are two names frequently mentioned, and while the former intrigues the Sox, the Rockies’ asking price is prohibitively high. — Boston Herald

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

According to national baseball writer Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News, the Cardinals are among several teams that have expressed interest in pursuing outfielder Matt Holliday and lefthanded reliever Brian Fuentes of the Colorado Rockies. Colorado (32-51) is last in the National League West, and according to reports out of Denver, the team will decide at the All-Star break whether to put players on the market. Ringolsby’s report cited the Cardinals, Angels, Dodgers, Tampa Bay and Kansas City as teams interested in Holliday. — St. Louis Post-Dispatch
