Miguel Tejada is traded to Astros

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Former American League MVP Miguel Tejada was traded Wednesday from the Baltimore Orioles to the Houston Astros for five players. The Orioles got outfielder Luke Scott, pitchers Matt Albers, Troy Patton and Dennis Sarfate, and third baseman Michael Costanzo.

Tejada hit .296 with 18 home runs and 81 RBIs this season. At 31, he’s a four-time All-Star shortstop, but the Orioles were worried about his range.

Tejada had resisted efforts by the Orioles to move him over to third base. It’s uncertain where he’ll play for Houston, which has an unsettled left side of the infield.

Sources: O’s, Astros discuss Tejada

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

The Astros have had significant discussions with the Orioles about shortstop Miguel Tejada, but the two sides are not close to a deal, according to major-league sources. The Astros apparently believed a trade was possible Wednesday night, telling at least two other clubs that they were on the verge of a major deal. It is not clear whether their focus was Tejada.

Astros officials said Thursday morning that nothing was imminent, suggesting perhaps that the talks had faded. Other sources also indicated that the discussions were not in an advanced phase.

A Houston radio station reported Thursday that the Astros were close to acquiring Tejada for shortstop Adam Everett, second baseman Chris Burke and a pitcher.

Such a return would not be nearly enough for the Orioles, according to one source. Andy MacPhail, the team’s president of baseball operations, won’t need to be “overwhelmed” for Tejada, the source said, but will need a competitive offer.

The Astros’ interest in Tejada dates to July 2006, when they tried to acquire him for Roy Oswalt, only to have the deal quashed by Orioles owner Peter Angelos.

Everett was one reason Angelos vetoed the deal; the Astros included him in their offer for Tejada, and Angelos did not want him.

Orioles will pursue Teixeira for ’09

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

The Baltimore Orioles can’t wait to make a play for Texas Rangers’ first baseman Mark Teixeira, who could become a free agent after the 2008 season.

But Teixeira, a native of Severna Park, Md., will have another option if he wishes to play close to home – the Washington Nationals, who open their new ballpark in ’08 and could score a public-relations coup by trumping the Orioles.

Phillies after Tejada

Friday, January 6th, 2006

The Phillies have proposed an Abreu-for-Tejada exchange with the intention of playing Tejada at third base. The Orioles want pitching in addition to Abreu, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations.

Abreu, who turns 32 in March, is not as accomplished a hitter as Ramirez, but he’s less expensive, less controversial and two years younger. In addition, the Orioles almost certainly would prefer to trade Tejada to a club outside of their division rather than the Red Sox.

For the Phillies, Tejada would represent a major upgrade at third over David Bell, who is signed for next season at $4.5 million and perhaps could be traded for a comparably priced outfielder. Tejada, who turns 30 on May 25, has only played shortstop during his nine-year major-league career. However, Tejada is pushing for a trade to a contender

Rumor: Cubs will send Prior to Orioles for Tejada

Thursday, December 22nd, 2005

The Cubs, aggressively pursuing a blockbuster trade for Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada, are willing to part with a top starting pitcher, most likely right-hander Mark Prior, sources tell FOXsports.com.

The Cubs and Orioles also have engaged in three-way discussions with the Red Sox in which Tejada would go to the Cubs and Ramirez to the Orioles, according to another source. The package the Sox would receive is unclear, but conceivably could include Prior, shortstop Ronny Cedeno and center fielder Corey Patterson.

Ramirez Offered For Tejada

Saturday, December 10th, 2005

In another attempt to move unhappy superstar Manny Ramirez, the Red Sox front office offered to trade him straight up for All-Universe Shortstop Miguel Tejada. This coming immediately after Tejada made his feelings public that he was not happy in Baltimore and did not have faith in the future of the ballclub. Shortly after that, he mentioned that if and when he would be moved, he would like to stay on the East Coast, preferably in Boston.

Seeing that he is by far Baltimore’s best player, and basically the face of the franchise, I highly doubt that anything will come of this. The only outside possibility might be if the Red Sox make the offer so lucrative, that the Orioles would have to say yes. Possible ways of making the offer look a little more palpable would be to throw in a nice chunk of money towards the remaining 3 years, $57 million on Manny’s contract and to throw in maybe Bronson Arroyo or a young arm in their farm system.

Tejada demands to be traded

Thursday, December 8th, 2005

"I’ve been with the Orioles for two years and things haven’t gone in the direction that we were expecting, so I think the best thing will be a change of scenery," Tejada told The Associated Press during a telephone interview in his native Dominican Republic.

Tejada signed a $72 million, six-year contract with the Orioles before the 2004 season making this one, not too likely
