Bradley agrees to deal with Rangers

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

Free-agent outfielder Milton Bradley has reached preliminary agreement on a one-year contract with the Texas Rangers, according to a major-league source. The deal, pending a physical, will give Bradley the chance to serve as a designated hitter early next season if he recovers slowly from reconstructive knee surgery. The contract is reportedly worth $5 million (the Padres reportedly offered Bradley $4 mllion on a one-year deal).

The Padres, who continue to negotiate with Japanese free-agent outfielder Kosuke Fukudome and their own free agent, Mike Cameron, did not make Bradley as strong an offer as the Rangers, the source said.

Bradley was traded from the A’s to the Padres on June 29. He batted a combined .306 with 13 homers and 37 RBIs in 209 at-bats in a season marred by injury and controversy.

Padres taking chance on Bradley

The Padres’ acquisition of A’s outfielder Milton Bradley stems from the team’s realization that it will be unable to trade for a slugger such as the Reds’ Adam Dunn or White Sox’s Jermaine Dye.

Bradley’s arrival, combined with the return of right fielder Brian Giles from the disabled list on Thursday night, could give the Padres a lift in their tight NL West race with the Dodgers and Diamondbacks.

The Padres sent the A’s minor-league pitcher Andrew Brown, according to the Associated Press, which first reported the trade. The A’s are giving San Diego $1,360,929 to cover part of the approximately $2.05 million Bradley is owed for the remainder of the season.

Bradley, 29, has been on the disabled list three times this season with leg injuries. Some scouts believe that his ability is declining due to his continued physical problems.

L..A. will send Bradley and infielder Antonio Perez to Oakland for outfield prospect Andre Ethier.

Bradley is coming off a season that saw him play in just 75 games and ended with knee surgery. But before being hurt, Bradley was hitting .290 with 13 homers and 38 RBIs.

Ethier, 23, had a .385 on-base percentage and .497 slugging percentage last season at Class AA Midland, finishing with 18 homers and 80 RBIs in 505 at-bats while being named the Texas League Player of the Year. He was promoted to Class AAA Sacramento at the end of the season and also posted strong numbers in the Arizona Fall League.

Oakland will likely use Bradley in one of the two corner outfield positions, with Mark Kotsay manning center and Nick Swisher likely going to first base.
