Dodgers, Garciaparra agree on 2-year deal

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Six-time All-Star Nomar Garciaparra and the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed Monday to an $18.5 million, two-year contract. The 33-year-old Garciaparra, the NL comeback player of the year, will get a $2.5 million signing bonus, a salary of $7.5 million next season and $8.5 million in 2008. His deal also contains performance bonuses and a no-trade provision.

A two-time AL batting champion, Garciaparra shifted to first base with the Dodgers last season, his first with the team. He hit .303 with 93 RBIs and 20 home runs.

Nomar, Dodgers close to signing another deal

The Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday night that the team will offer the free agent a multiyear contract with a higher base salary than the incentive-laden deal Garciaparra played with last season.

Bonds, Thomas, Nomar file for free agency

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

One day after the World Series ended, baseball’s business season began Saturday when San Francisco’s Barry Bonds, Oakland’s Frank Thomas and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Noma Garciaparra headed 59 players who filed for free agency.

Oakland pitcher Barry Zito and Washington’s Alfonso Soriano are the biggest names available in this year’s free-agent class. Approximately 200 players are eligible to file by the Nov. 11 deadline, and free agents can start talking money with all teams the following day.

Dodgers get Garciaparra

Sunday, December 18th, 2005

Free-agent infielder Nomar Garciaparra has agreed to a one-year contract with the Dodgers. The question now is how the Dodgers will resolve their infield logjam once shortstop Cesar Izturis returns from elbow-ligament transplant surgery, probably at mid-season.

Garciaparra, 32, chose the Dodgers over the Yankees, Indians and Astros. A former All-Star shortstop with the Red Sox, he is expected to play a new position, first base. But second baseman Jeff Kent had been expected to move to first after Izturis returned, with Izturis replacing Kent at second.

The biggest question with Garciaparra is his health; in the past two seasons, he has appeared in only 143 games. He missed more than three months with a groin injury last season, but he hit well for the Cubs after returning in early August, batting .318 with 11 doubles and nine homers in 179 at-bats.

Yankees Make Offer To Nomar

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005

It looks like the Yankees have made an offer to former Red Sox Shortstop Nomar Garciaparra to have him play First Base, which would most likely leave Jason Giambi to DH. Nomar definitely still has a solid bat when healthy, but for this deal to make sense, the Yankees would have to make it a highly incentive based contract based on the injuries that have hit him over the last three years.

Nomar in talks with a dozen teams

Wednesday, December 7th, 2005

The Braves are scheduled to meet Wednesday with the representatives for Nomar Garciaparra, who is drawing significant interest from nearly a dozen clubs, including the Yankees, Orioles, Blue Jays, Padres, Dodgers and Indians. Garciaparra could play left field for the Braves and serve as a backup at shortstop and third base.

Personally, I don’t know who in the world would want Nomar, the guy hasn’t played a full season if you combine the last few years.  He can’t stay off the DL

Indians To Pursue Garciaparra As Possible RF

Saturday, December 3rd, 2005

This could be a solid addition to the Indians club. He would fit nicely in the middle of their lineup with Martinez, Hafner, and Sizemore. Right Field might actually be a good spot for Garciaparra defensively also….he definitely has the cannon for it.
